I picked one up the other day that had been a range rental gun with an untold number of rounds through it. Exterior condition was better than expected and it seems to function OK. For some reason it appealed to me, especially for $200, as a 22 caliber plinker.

Wow, I would never buy a range rental gun. But yeah you will probably get tired of shooting it long before you wear it out. 22 handguns are lots of fun.

Keep it clean and lubed and it will last forever.
The slide is made out of ZINC.
Carbon grit (powder deposits) particles are very rough, hard and abrasive.

Thanks all,

After reading the criticism about HiPoint zinc slides I was a little concerned about the zinc slide on this Walther. However after doing some research if this Walther holds up as well as the HP it should be fine ;-D.

I was a little concerned about buying a range gun but I've always felt that neglect does more damage than use and the pistol looked well maintained. With hints of Spring I was in the mood for a light weight trail gun for fishing and hiking, the P22 caught my eye.

As mentioned above, the slides are made of zinc. While that metal may be adequate for .22LR pistol, a lot of people have reported the slides literally breaking in half after long term use. Google "Walther P22 slide break"

I've got multiple thousands of rounds through mine and it doesn't even show any wear yet.

I'm at 10k with mine. But then again I got mine to simply be a suppressor host. It's doing the job very well. I've only put maybe three mags through it without my gemtech.

Well, I bought one when they first came out. Put maybe 2K rounds thru it without issue. Gave it to a retired buddy who was having a hard time with heavier, all steel handguns. He has a backyard range, and buys 2 bricks of ammo a month at Walmart, most of which go thru that gun. I gave it to him about 5 years ago, and its still going strong.

I bought a new P22 last year, mine's been just fine. Some slides have broken, but I seem to recall that a lot of them were on the long barrel model. If you do a Google search for "P22 Bible", you'll find some great tips and techniques for making your P22 last longer and work better.
