NYPD 5946
Does anyone know if NYPD still authorizes the 5946? I'd like to find a used one to add to my collection.

The boxes are marked "NYPD", I own one. Mine was supposedly unissued, sold as a overrun. These are fine handguns, a bit heavy, but accurate. MecGar makes a flush fit seventeen round magazine for the #5900 series pistols, I have two and they work fine.

Sorry for bumping an inactive topic, but it's great that the NYPD has decided to stick with steel over plastic.
If there's an overrun for NYPD 5946 pistols, do they sell those? I've always wanted an NYPD or Cleveland PD 5946, but good things like those rarely find their way to Alaska.

I retired brom NYPD and own that gun. All the NYPD guns have a heavier tripper pull. Most NYPD carry tupperware made in Austria.

I have a Cleveland PD 5943 (which I love) and have been somewhat looking for an NYPD 5946. I have found many sellers who claim their gun is former NYPD, but without the box or some other documentation I am not buying. I have however seen 5946's that were marked NYPD in the serial number, but I believe they were a special purchase gun and not an issued duty weapon.

Actually, the 5946 meets dept specs out of the box. The Glock and Sig were thoroughly destroyed by the department.

I'm checking a source to see what is still available on these.
I am wanting a New, Old stock 5946 from 1997 when I got hired, since I sold mine when I went East. I might have to just buy a new 2011, if I can't find the older ones.

Does NYPD issue handguns? I was told that a list was given to recruits of approved handguns that they were allowed to buy. Most bought Glock 19s because that was the cheapest one on the list.
What about approved off duty guns? Are backups allowed on duty?

They've always picked from an approved list and bought whichever one they wanted. Same was true when the 9mms were adopted. Recently, not sure how long back, the Union buys them for the new hires and all you pay for is the price of the night sights. All older handguns are grandfathered if you wish to retain them, but if you upgrade you pay for the new piece.
Current authorized off duties: Glock 26, S&W 3914DAO and 3953TSW, SIG P239DAO. There were some others but they are no longer authorized (Kahr K9) or no longer made (Beretta Cougar compact DAO). Revolvers were last authorized as off duties in '97 or '98 I believe. Last ones were the S&W 640-2 (basically a 640-1 in .38 only, it replaced the 640 no dash since it wasn't made anymore) and Ruger SPNY (SP101 DAO in .38).

Try Gunbroker, they pop up a lot. You can tell by the warnings on the slide.

So, are new 5946 being produced just for the NYPD? From my way of thinking they'd need more volume than that to justify manufacturing such a labor intensive pistol. 5946 is just a DAO version of a 5906 right?

I have a 5946 that Smith says was originally sold to Cincinnati police. It has BT08 on the right side of the slide. I wonder if Cincinnati sold it to another department. Perhaps Blendon Township in Franklin county? It was bought at Vance's which is close to Blendon Township.
Any Cincinnati or Blendon Township officers on here?

NYPD 5946 Rail, Beretta 92D
I have two questions regarding NYPD guns. First, was the Smith 5946 (equipped with the accessory rail) ever approved for carry by any MOS? ESU maybe? Second, can anyone tell me the history of the Beretta (92D I think) with NYPD? I.E. were they only ESU guns, were any stainless, compact, etc. Thank you all in advance; I have a huge amount of NOPD (New Orleans) for anyone interested.

I'm pretty sure they are not making them anymore for anyone. The only recent third gen I have seen being/been made was the 3914DAO and there was some proof they were making a 3913TSWDAO labeled as a 3983.
And yes, the 5946 is basically a 5906 with DAO.

The Beretta 92 was never issued. ESU pushed hard for them but it never happened.

MTS: At one time, there was discussion of the NYPD testing, fairly extensively, as I recall, the M&P 9 full size and perhaps the compact M&P 9 also. Do you have any reliable current information on that?

Here is an interesting article on the NYPD's 5946 pistols and their ability to miss the broadside of a barn with the guns.
