I would have gladly paid that.....great gun.....the first 3rd gen Smith I ever saw belonged to our local FBI resident agent. It was the twin of your gun. That was in 1988. I let him borrow a holster for a Smith model 59 I had.....never got it back...
The triggers on those 3rd gen guns are great. Love those NOS Smiths.

Great deal and great price! I paid about $100 more for my LNIB 5906, but it came with 4 mags. Gotta love lack of recoil when you shoot it.

I think you got a good buy on a high quality pistol. I bought a NIB one at a gunshow a little over a year ago for $420 OTD. Mine is a newer production model, rounded trigger guard and black hammer and trigger. I have owned 5906's for 15 years or so and think the world of them.

Some of the "blue gun" molds used to make holsters have a square trigger guard so you have to almost check case by case to see if a particular will fit. None of my third gen guns have square guards so I can't check holsters for you.
Yes, you can use 15 round mags. Mec-Gar makes an excellent 17 rounder that's the same size as well.

Outstanding pistol and great price! You did well.
I don't know what S&W meant by it being a second generation, AFAIK it's third. Yours is early, with that rear sight and square trigger guard. I have an identical one (TFJxxx) that I picked up lightly used with half a dozen factory mags for $350, but that was several years ago.

Good deal. I paid $420.00 for one with < 50 rounds through it, one mag and no box/paperwork.
Only difference from yours is mine has a round trigger guard. NBD.

5906 and Galco holster
Johnchamp:
Congratulations! That's a nice looking gun and yes, you got a very nice deal. I sold a used one 5 years ago (to the right guy at the right time it now seems) for $500 cash.
I just bought another LNIB S&W 5906 with 3 magazines, just like yours except with fixed sights, for $375. I would have paid $400-450 for it as it was in mint shape. Mine also has the squared trigger guard.
I've seen NIB ones go for $650+, although they can take a long time to sell at that price. They seem to sell quickly if NIB if they are priced at $500 (at least on two of the major on-line gun brokering sites that I check out frequently)
Where did you find yours at that price? I was curious if they have any more or if this was just a one gun deal- as I know a guy that wants one.
Attached is a photo of mine sitting in it's Galco holster. The Galco holster, at least mine, takes a little while to break in but now works well and rides comfortably. I do suggest a well made quality belt, like a Filson, or another belt that is purpose-made for holstering.

I would pay $500.00 for a 5906 NIB with the mags, papers etc. It's a damn nice gin and having one in pristine condition is worth a premium.
$400.00 was a steal.

Johnchamp:
sorry about any confusion, I didn't mean to imply that my holster was a Fletch model.
I was just commenting on Galco being a good brand in general. I think mine is a "3 slot COP model with thumb break" or something like that.

trigger guard shape on 5906
I agree with you about the square trigger guard, which is also on my 5906. I like the way it works better with gloves, and also if you want to steady your off-hand finger there.
However; I like the way the rounded trigger guards look slightly better.
Also on compact models, like the 4014 I just bought, I like the rounded trigger guard because it makes the gun easier to holster and of course is slightly smaller.
having one with each style trigger guard is a good idea of course. This is a good reason to have more than one 5906. (or a 5906/5903 combo). You can't have too many of them.

I just got a 5906 and it has a round trigger guard w/ silver trigger and a black hammer. I have never heard of this combination before.
Got it from CDNN, asked for all silver and he couldn't find one out of the 10 he pulled. It cleaned up nice, I'd rate it a 95% with a few surface scratches nothing that you can actually feel. Internals looked shiny, almost new. He said they had over 1000 of them. Looked like CDNN put brand new hogue grips on it.
One question I had was if you dry fire in double action and don't let the trigger fully come foward the trigger will be semi dead. Which translates to the hammer starts to move and the trigger just clicks without double strike capability. So instead of letting the triiger come forward till you feel the reset it must come all the way forward.
May just be me being used to shooting striker fired guns. Curious if this was normal.

holster for 5906 with square trigger guard
I keep mine in a Galco which has worked out well. I don't know the particular model number- if you call them they will tell you.
I sold one just like it a few years ago for $500, (and regretted that decision) and recently found another one on GB LNIB with all papers and 3 factory S&W mags for $350. I was very happy with that deal!
