Question 6906 Serial number confusion

I have just bought a new to me 6906. I called S&W to ask a few questions and the fellow could not help me. He needed the S/N and I told him BDXxxxx, he said that number was not the S/N. I was told it had to be a 6 digit number and that BDXxxxx could not be the S/N. Can you folks help me out? Any help will be greatly appreciated, K.C.

Mine, from about the early 90's is TDE1xxx, which is the same three letter, 4 number format as yours. The guy was apparently confused.

The bad thing about it, I was talking to a S&W employee in the warranty and recall department! He might have been having a bad morning or just a case of brain gas. I was really confused after talking to him. Thanks for the help, K.C.

S&W serial numbers do jump around, BDX shows up in revolvers in early '89. If your gun is from '88-'92 it would most likely have the square trigger guard and straight blade rear sight. Not sure where the confusion lies, but is there a possiblity that there is a mis-stamp of the serial number on your gun?

My recently acquired 6906 has the BDXxxxx # on the left side of the frame, just as my 4566 does. The 6906 also has CO1xx on the right side on the frame, slide, and barrel. It's stamped, not etched like the BDXxxxx is.

Anyone know what's with that?

Handgunner356, the s/n is on the left side (pistol pointed at target) right under the slide latch. Stamped into frame is: S&W SPFLD, MA USA, then under that is MOD 6906, then last, under that is the BDXxxxx. That was where the S&W rep told me to look and that the s/n had no letters, just a 6 digit number. Thanks,K.C.

He was confused or something. Both the 3rd gens I've owned and my M&P have letter/number combo serial numbers

That was a CA Dept of COrrections gun, those are inventory control numbers.

I actually like to have all the parts stamped with the same number, I think it's a good idea. On mine, the CA numbers are done better than the Smith serial numbers!

Yeah, it sounds like you need to call back, he must not have had his morning coffee yet.

I have a 6906 with the serial # stamped on the left side of the frame below the slide stop. simply says "TCBxxxx, and beneath that "mod 6906". I got this pistol issued, NIB, sometime in the early 90's. Have been trying to get a production day with nil results.

Welcome! It’s always best to post new questions in a new thread. This one is 9 years old.

The SN prefix dates your 6906 to late 1988. If you still have the original box with end label we can give you an exact age from the Special Order code.
