S&W MODEL 41 FILLED LETTERING?????
Picked this up today at a local gun show. Serial number is: A5373XX. Was wondering did the factory fill in this lettering or was it done after it was purchased? Came with 2 mags and numbered box to the gun for $750. Thanks for any help.

It's not factory. However I think you did good. I'd guess it dates to late 1978, which is the year they dropped the 7 3/8" barrel with muzzle brake and the cocking indicater.

GOLD LETTERING ON MODEL 41
It looks to me that the previous owner filled in the lettering with a Lacquer Stik. Brownells carries them for $4.99 each. I have used them on my 41 and they look great. You can find them on Brownells cat # 63, on page 383.
The 41's are great guns, almost put the bullets in one hole. I am sure that you will enjoy your new purchase.

lettering, ammo
So the fact that the filled lettering was added as a enhancement to the gun I'm hoping it won't affect the value. I thought boxed and papered for $725.00 was a fair price for this gun. Any recommendations for what to use for ammo with no issues??? Thanks again for everyone's help.

The choice of ammo for model 41s is a subject that comes up time and time again on this and other forums. The general consensus is that CCI SV (standard velocity) is the "go to" ammo to start out with. Many shooters have reported success with other types of ammo as well. Most people avoid shooting high velocity ammo.

CCI Blazer 22 LR works great in my two M41s. It is the most affordable and accurate 22 ammo I have found. I just started on my third case.

If you grow tired of the letter filled gold, Hoppes and a tooth pick will remove the "paint". Takes a little time, but not hard to remove. Nice find. Congrats!

Acetone and a cotton swab takes it off quickly. Be sure to use gloves and a well ventilated area. Nick

It's easily removed if you don't like it and once removed it won't affect the value. I think you also got a good price on the pistol.
