Question Model 39

Just purchased a NIB S & W model 39 with serial number #2240, it is blued. How can I tell if this is a steel or alloy frame and slide. According to info I found it states anything between serial number 1000 and 2600 are all steel. But Others are telling me that isn't true. Can anyone clarify?

I can't answer about the serial # range, but a simple magnet test should tell you if the frame is steel or alloy. You can also field strip it and the weight of the frame should also be a good indicator.

I haven't seen a steel 39 in person, but I believe the finish should match between the frame and the slide (right?), whereas with the aluminum-framed ones, it's noticeably different.

It should be fairly obvious. The alloy frames look slightly different(shinier) than the slide. Also the weight and feel of the parts should be a give away. Magnet test would also give you the answer.

Is your pistol marked "Model 39" or does it lack a model marking? It is in the zone where it could be either way. The steel frame guns all have 5 digit serial numbers in three different ranges. The source of your information is incorrect.

Don't know what you paid but a new unfired in box 39 sounds like a super find.

Here's an image of pre-39 number 2357. This is not a steel frame and will illustrate the color difference if your magnate is broken
