Default New 1076 owner checking in

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I popped in my favorite GS today just to browse and they had a 1076 in the used section, so here I am Didn't even think twice since I've been casually looking for a 10xx for about a year now. I wasn't so serious as to go the gunbroker.com route, but when there was 1 in the display case, I didn't waiver on the purchase either. It's not an FBI gun (doesn't have the fire w/o mag warning on the right side), but it does have the FBI palm swell grips. The underside of the frame in front of the trigger has A.H.P.D. 04 engraved on it. I wonder what PD that is, Arlington Heights, IL? The odd thing about the 04 is that I highly doubt the gun was purchased and put into service in '04. Maybe it was an officer's duty gun and he retired in '04? Anyways, I'm gonna send my $50 to Smith for my letter of authenticity.

I do have a couple questions that maybe you guys can help me with. Is the slide stop a real pain to remove for field stripping on these guns? It doesn't pop out nearly as easy as it does on my 1911s (Colt and Para). Also, how do you know for sure it won't fire w/o a mag? Can you tell by dry firing? Or does the trigger/hammer work normally and the only difference is internal that you can't tell w/o a live round in it?

CBus660Rm welcome to the forum!
You have to pull the slide back to align the notch in the slide with the stop pin and carefully push it the pull from the oposite side, be careful not to mar the frame by twisting it before it is far enough away from the frame. After it is out of the frame the slide will slip off of the frame and the recoil rod should be captured under the barrel till you remove it. Be careful here because if you let it slip it can fly across the room. (can break glass windows or door glass)

If the pistol is cleared/empty you can dry fire it to test the firing pin. I usually drop a pencil eraser first into the barrel to check fiing pin function. If the pencil jumps up the firing pin is working.

There is a plunger (under the rear sight extending down to the interior of the slide) (that is left out) I believe to allow the pistol to fire without the magazine. The slide may not be drilled out for the plunger in the case of will fire without the magazine.

BTW are there two small dimples punch marks under the decocker lever. there was a upgrade done on the 1076 and the two punch marks indicated the upgrade.

Default S&W 1026 1076 info

1026 - 3,135 units produced 1990-91
1076 - 13,805 units produced 1990-93

S&W 1026- 5.00" barrel, frame mounted decocker traditional double action
S&W 1076- 4.25" barrel, frame mounted decocker traditional double action
These can be decocked by pushing down on the frame mounted decocking lever, the hammer is dropped to a half or partially cocked position and pulling the trigger will cock and fire the pistol. After the gun is fired it is fully recocked and the gun is fired single action till empty or decocked. The hammer when dry fired will be all the way down but pulling the trigger will cock and fire the gun. Some models can be fired without the magazine present if the magazine disconnect is removed. FBI models worked this way..

Thanks for the info Shadow. Mine launches a pencil pretty good with the mag removed. Hmmm... Not that it matters 1 way or the other to me, but it appears my gun should have the warning on the slide then. It'll be interesting to see what Smith says when I get my letter. Mine does have the dimples from the recall.

To give you a bit of a back story, I've always wanted a 10mm, but never acted on it. It wasn't until the Vltor Bren Ten was coming with ship dates that I decided to spend money. I put my money down with a Bass Pro Shop near me and waited, and waited, and waited. Then when that project was pushed back indefinitely last June, I got my money back and started doing some more research. Glocks don't do anything for me, so I passed on them. A 1911 was off the block too since I already have 2 of those and for me, they should be chambered in .45 or .38 Super. Then I looked at the Witness, but got scared off by some of the horror stories with those. The more I read about the 10xx, the more I said that was the gun for me since it's such a robust gun with a great track record. This will not be a carry gun, just a fun gun, and I wanted something I knew could handle the hottest rounds out there, so when I let friends shoot it, they can experience the power! LOL I have been checking GB for prices, but like I said, I never got around to actually bidding on a gun there. So when I saw the 1076 today, I jumped on it. I was open to any of the SA/DA models, just wasn't going to get a 1086 and knew that a 1046 (if I ever even saw 1) would be way outta my budget (just like the D&D Bren Tens).

Well I was in the same boat with the pre-paid VLTOR BrenTen desiring a "Vice Model" Eric and company has soured the potential buyers with the lack of product. Very disappointed and still would like to aquire a VLTOR if ever they come to be. I have looked for a Bren Ten Original but didn't ever find any yet in my budget...

I have aquired all of the S&W 10xx series and the pics are posted around here somewhere.

I did get the Wolff Gun Springs extra power recoil springs for my 1006 and 1076 to help with brass ejecting so far away. I went with the 20 lb for the 1076.

Recoil Springs listed For Use in:
4566, 4567, 4576, 4586, .45 ACP
1066, 1076, 1086, 10mm

•Reduced Power...: 14 & 16 Lb.
•Factory Standard.: 17 Lb.
•Extra Power........: 18, 19, 20 & 22 Lb.

Recoil Calibration Pak includes 1 each 17 pound factory recoil spring and 1 each of 18, 19, 20 and 22 pound extra power recoil springs. 3 extra power firing pin springs are also included.

Springs for SMITH & WESSON NUMBERED SERIES Semi-Auto Pistols

Best regards and good luck!

Thanks for the info on the springs. I'll have to get those since I plan on running some of the hot Double Tap rounds. I'm already thinking that I'll play with this gun a bit, send it out to get coated, maybe see if the trigger can be worked, etc... All of my guns that I have so far are box stock so I've yet to really personalize one. This seems like a great gun to do it to since it's used and could use a little spiffing up. Even if I put $600 into it, it'll still cost me less than buying a Vltor if/when they ever come out lol

No LE caution statement, palm swell grip and no mag safety? Could be an FBI 1076. Is there a "u" stamped on the bottom of the trigger guard?

Nope. Nothing there. No inverse T on the side of the trigger guard either. Inside of the slide says 10mm, not 1006 like early 1076's mentioned in the FBI thread. Serial num is TFS36xx. We'll know for sure in a few weeks when I get my letter back from S&W. I'm not holding my breath that it is one. I got it for a fair price for 1 that isn't. But it'll be cool if it is Like I noted above, it does have the A.H.P.D engraving, so it does appear to be a LEO duty issue gun of some sort.

PS It does have tritium sights, but they're dead.

My guess on the "04" after A.H.P.D. was probably just an in house inventory number. And a Google search of A.H.P.D. only revealed Arlington Heights (IL) Police Dept. so you are probably right on there.

Make sure you post back when you find out further. Inquiring minds want to know further.

Got to shoot the new gun last night. 1st impressions are this: 1st I need to get used to the trigger. This is my first DA/SA gun, I'm used to 1911s. Not an issue, just need to get some more rounds through it. 2nd is the kick. At least with the American Eagle FMJs, it wasn't as snappy as my Para Ordnance P12-45. Of course, the Para is a compact alloy frame, so a lot less mass there. Need to get some full house Double Taps now 3rd is a trip to the range is a good way to remind yourself just how bad your eyesight is! LOL Even with my Ruger Mark 2 with target sights, I was lucky to get 2" groups at 21 feet. My next purchase needs to be Lasik!

Default 1076

The A.H.P.D. stamping is for Auburn Hills Police Department in Michigan (home of the Detroit Pistons).

I have the same pistol purchased from an officer in 1993 after they switched to .40 cals.

Mine also has the same TFS prefix. The number 4 is an inventory number.

Great gun!

Does yours fire w/o a mag, but not have the warning on the slide?

OK, here's a pic. Not the best, but it'll have to do for now.

As you can see, not pristine, but shoots just fine and that's what matters

Default Magazine safety

Mine does not have the magazine safety so it is capable of firing without the magazine and there are no warning on the gun.

Congrats. I finally had a chance to shoot my 1076 this past weekend that I picked up in March. LOVED the way it shot. It's been a while since I even fired my 20 year old Delta. Gotta get more 10mm out.

I love getting old police guns. I got very lucky in that my 1076 did letter as an FBI gun. Now I need a Kentucky State Police 1076 to add to the collection. I already have an Ohio Highway Patrol Beretta in .40 that I got about 10 years ago.

I read somewhere Clinton passed a law which forced all federal agencies to destroy their firearm instead of reselling to the public. Anyone know if this is true?

What do the letters run to get now? I have a 1006 stamped with "E.P.D." and a 4-digit # and wonder if it was issued or somebody's personal carry...
