Default S&W 4576

Has anyone owned one of these 4576's .I have seen a 1076but not a 4576.I ran across one that a guy wants to sell. Can anyone tell me more about it .It looks like a 4566 except it has a frame mounted decocker.Anyone know how many were made and the approximate value in 95% condition. How rare are they ?Thanks for any help that you can give.

I have one and it is essentially the same as the commercial 1076. Mine has the round trigger guard. I do not know how many were made, but you rarely see one for sale. Some have the large squared-off trigger guard. I have not shot it but have no doubts about its capability to perform equally as well as other 3rd gen S&Ws.

Here's my 4576 (and my 4566 on top). There were only about 1380 of them produced. I have a factory letter that tells the exact number. It's something like 1386 or 89. Get it and keep it.

So what...get it. The marking isn't going to make it shoot any better or worse.

I hear you Have Gun-Will Travel. I, too, like my pistols unmarked. However, keep this in mind. I have been collecting S&W 3rd generation autos fairly seriously since about January 2007. I have about 22 of them now and have had another 10 or more pass through my hands (i.e., I bought them and later sold them). I keep an eye on my local gun shops and shows in Ventura and Orange County, California, and my brother keeps his eye open where he lives in Bakersfield (Kern County), California. We both attend the large 3-day Crossroads of the West gun show in Phoenix, Arizona, each December.

I have personally seen only one 4576. It's the one you see in the photo in my previous post. On the other hand, I have seen a fair number of 1076 and a few 1026 pistols, but only one 4576.

So, you do what you think is best for you. Good luck with your decision. I made mine a few years ago.

If you don't buy it I will. I've only seen one in person and it was also SD marked with the department name and either a badge number or rack number. Buyer in front of me was waffling about the purchase price and finally threw down the asking price of $350! PM me the sellers info so I can make contact with them if you decide it's not for you.

I believe that, as the old knight said to Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade, "You have chosen wisely."

If you don't believe me, he'll tell you himself:
