Default Laser sight for 3gen?

I've thought I might like to have a laser sight, but would want it to be unobtrusive...there doesn't seem to be much to pick from, especially since I have a 4556 and a 4586 and am not interested in giving 'em up...

I understand LaserMax makes a guide rod laser for some of the plastic pistols; has anyone ever experimented with converting one to fit a metal frame? Crimson Trace offers a grip for the double stack nines; has anyone ever modified one to fit a 45 or 10mm?

I'm not averse to doing a little machining if need be. From looking at mine, it looks like it should be a relatively simple thing to fit a guide rod laser to it. The trick, I would think, would be in how to activate it...ideas?
