Default 4516 question

Stumbled onto a 4516-1 for sale. Nice price, two mags, box.

Question is what is unique to the -1 model that makes the yellow mag warning on the magazines? Are there issues with certain models in the 4516 series? How many different dash's were there.

thanks

Do a search. I am pretty sure there was a thread about this recently. If I remember correctly the yellow followers could be replaced by the newer black ones.

AS DOT said do a search on 4516 and there is a TON of info.. There were issues with the original issue of feeding on the 4516 that was rectified with the release of the -1 -2 etc.. The yellow followers denote 4516-1 usage only. BUT work quite well in my 4513 and shorty 45 AT THE RANGE.

I think S&W changed the angle of the follower for better feeding. BTW, is that Columbia County NY Philmont? I hunt in Austerlitz.

Thumbs up

I have a 4536 (Like a 4516 but has the SIG style decocker) and have the same yellow follower mags. Bought another 7 shot mag from Midway. It is a black follower and works fine.

Last month I bought some used magazines to use in my model 4566. One had the yellow follower in it. I asked similar questions then about the yellow follower, and why on one side of the magazine that had the yellow follower in it, it also had the words "This magazine must have a yellow follower." Folks here answered all my questions. BTW all the used magazines that I bought have functioned flawlessly in my 4566.

Philmontscout, I picked up a 4516-2 a few years back and the four mags that came with it all had black followers. I also have a full size 6450 (transition pistol between the 2nd generation 645 and 3rd generation 4506) and that one came with yellow followers in the magazines. Strangely enough, the 4516 shoots flawlessly with the original 4516 magazines with black (upgraded) followers but it also shoots flawlessly with the 8 shot magazines for the 4506 with either black or the original yellow followers. Of course the 8 shot magazine extends past the bottom of the grip but it still shoots regardless of the color or version of the followers.

Both pistols will also chamber empty cartridges from the magazine during firing which says a lot about the design of the pistol and the feed ramp of the barrel! Needless-to-say, both of these pistols are keepers!

Buy the 4516-1 if you can afford it. You'll be happy you did!
