Default How I Fixed a S&W 2206: a Ballpoint Pen Saved The Day

The problem: a Smith and Wesson model 2206 .22 pistol would function only with the original, hole-in-the-bottom magazine, not with any other S&W 2206/622/422 magazines. The extra magazines would cause the trigger to fail-to-reset after each shot. Almost every time, the gun was in un-cocked mode after firing a round.

The solution: I simply removed/replaced the magazine safety spring, which is located on a bar under the right grip panel (the spring apparently was too powerful, putting too much downward pressure on the magazines). I took a ballpoint-pen spring, shortened it 50% by cutting it with wire cutters, and put it in place of the old one. Presto! Now all the extra magazines work fine in the gun. It now runs like a well-oiled watch. (Cheers to whomever first mentioned this fix on the internet!). I cannot claim that this fix will fix other 2206s, but it fixed mine nicely.

Thumbs up It works!!!!!

I had the same problem with 2 extra 12 round mags that I ordered from S&W for my 2206. The "ear" on the upper right side of the mag that engages the safety lever was two short (or shallow), by a hair, on both new mags. The factory spring was strong enough to push the lever by the ear and let it drop back down. That interfered with the trigger reset. I removed the factory spring and replaced it with 1/2 of a ball point pen spring. Works like a charm and it even is still strong enough to help with the mag ejection.

I was about to ship everything to S&W for a fix but that hassle is now avoided.

Thanks!!!!

I fixed a piece of junk Davis .380 with a ball point pen spring and a piece of bronze brazing rod.
The extractor, pin, and spring came out while shooting.
Found the extractor. Not the other parts.
Made a new pin and used a spring from a pen.
Got rid of it the next day, and got over my desire to own a cheap gun.
