Sights: Fixed vs. adjustable?
Howdy folks,
I've got the S&W auto fever. I've found for whatever reason that I'm most interested in the Smiths sporting the "winged" adjustable rear sights.
I like 'em. They're unique and uniquely "S&W."
However, I shoot the 3rd Gen. guns with the Novak three dot sights much better.
Even so, I'm still attractred to the "winged" rear sights.
Which do you prefer and why?
Best,
Heekma

Novak for me, like both the sight picture and the look of the gun better.

I feel any decent adjustable sight is better than any fixed sight. No matter what sight picture you prefer, adjustable can get you closer to accurate.

I used to really like adjustable sights....until I realized that after initial sighting in, I never had to move them with common ammunition types. Since then, every pistol I bought has had fixed sights.

Depends on the intended use of the gun. For a carry gun that may get banged into tables, door frames, car doors, etc., I would prefer fixed sights. All eleven of my fixed sight model 10s, 64s, 65s, shoot perfectly to point of aim with 158 graing bullets. I keep them loaded with Federal SWCHP +P ammo and feel confident they will keep me safe. For hunting or target shooting, go with the adjustable sights.

Had 1 3rd gen of each sight type. I can live with either. On my old 5906 with adjustables, I never moved them. On my Novak equipped 4003, shoots right where it should. Neither is a deal breaker and I shoot both equally well.

+1
All of our working guns have night sights.
Most of our target guns have F/O front sights & adjustable rear sights.
Bullseye accuracy is rarely relevant in a self-defense gun.

While the 2nd gen winged rear site is nice because its adjustable for both windage and yardage I prefer the older 59/39 rear site because its more low profile.

Even though my very first gun was a 5906 W/AS, I prefer the Novaks. Unless you are talking 10mm and target shooting, the Novaks are perfect for everyday carry use.

I recently bought a SW1911 with an adjustable rear sight. I like the gun, but don't care for this sight. When I got it, I thought it would be easy to switch out the sight; this is not so.
I've been doing some research and I'm finding that the S&W adjustable sight for the 1911 is unique to S&W. Currently, I'm stuck with this site. It's not horrible, but three dots are easier to acquire.
My point is, be sure to get what you want before you buy. Apparently it's easier to switch from fixed to adjustable, but not the other way round.
