Default New to me Holy Grail: 39-2

I just stumbled on this yesterday, always wanted one so I grabbed it for $329 (no box/no tools/1 mag and a rear sight that looks like it caught the brunt of a drop) I can't wait to get it to the range but in the mean time I looked to grab an extra firing pin and extractor but all numrich's lists are model 39 parts the picture of the extractor certainly wasn't that big 2 piece one from the 39 so I assume it is for the 39-2?!? Any ideas? Any other place I might grab one to put away? Anything else I might need to squirrel away for a rainy day?
Serial Number A146xxx puts it around 1972-1973 I think?

Thanks in advance.

Very nice find! Out of all my weapons, my 39-2 is absolutely my favorite.

I was on their website the other day and noticed the same thing, and not sure if it is for the 39-2. Need to give them a call to see. I've already received my Wolff spring kit and am about to drop it off at the gunsmith to have it completely gone through.

I was at a gun show in Houston a few weeks ago and found a "New Old Stock" S&W magazine that had zero wear marks, SCORE!

I'll be adding a few more of these to my inventory.

I'd say that gun probably dates to 1971 or 72. I'd put an extra firing pin away, but wouldn't worry too much about the extractor. You might consider a set of fresh springs, as sooner or later they'll need replacing.

I'm betting you're going to love how it shoots....

That is a fine looking 39. I wish I had never sold mine, but that is water under the bridge. It was a good shooter and trouble free while in my posession.

Forget Numrich unless you enjoy rolling the dice. Each time I ordered something for my 4506-1 using their online schematics, I got something for an entirely different pistol... I ordered a grip and got one for a frame mounted decocker 1076, I ordered 2 recoil spring guide rods and got ones for a 4006 (4" barrel versus 5" barrel on the 4506).

You'd be better served by buying a slide assembly on the auction websites, swap yours out and end up with some spare parts in the process. One of the things I needed to replace on my 39-2 shortly after getting it was the alloy recoil spring guide rod... the end of it was a bit ragged. I went to a steel rod and also switched to the later style bushing the doesn't fully surround the guide rod.

I've been buying "parts kits" and other assemblies for all of my out of print S&W pistols to stockpile. Parts are already becoming increasing difficut to get and I plan to be shooting my pistols for many more years to come.

That's a nice looking 39-2 too!

Try Mark Reimer <[email protected]> List your wants and see what he can do. I found him to be OK to deal with.
Good luck

Congrats on a sweet pistol. I have a 39-2 that is the best shooter of all my semi- autos. Very accurate, 100% reliable.

You can get excellent magazines and holsters on eBay relatively cheaply.
