It seems the people that own them like to keep them.

What two guns said.
Bought this one in 2004. It was like new, with the box and four magazines. Needless to say, she's a keeper!

I stumbled across a 4516-2 at my local range. It was the only stainless gun in the consignment case among a sea of black polymer. It caught my attention right away and after doing some reading I bought it the next day for $475. I think I did very well and I LOVE...I mean love it...I have a friend with a very nice Sig 1911 Commander and I'll take the 4516-2 over it, every time!
I think they are hard to come by because people that own them don't particularly want to get rid of them.
One topic that I rarely see addressed here is trigger reset. I don't know if this is true for 1st or 2nd gen S&Ws, but the trigger rest on the 3rd gen S&Ws is amazing. After shooting my 4516, my XDm and my CZ 75 feel crude and unrefined.

I have one. No chance in it changing hands any time soon.
I have never, ever, seen one on a shelf for sale.

I just got to pick up my 4516-1 two days ago , can't wait to shoot it.
Had to give $500 for it here in california LBNIB plus extras mags ,holster, springs ,wilson oversized mag release .just ordered a spurred hammer and extra barrel for it. california gets a lower case c for a reason
Just made a deal for a 4006 and am trying to make a deal for a 1006 which really seem to go for top dollar here . I have no need for the 40 or the 10mm as I am a .45 guy but want makes up for need I love all steel guns
My steel S&W collection Is just getting started

You get one...you tend to keep it. Love mine...and it will be going to my 7-year old when it is time. Top is the big brother 645 transitional and the 4516-1 on the bottom.

I was lucky enough to find a pair of NIB 4513TSWs in August of '09. Bought them both, sold one to a member here and kept the other, I will never part with it. Very sweet shooter.

They are sweet shooters and like everyone said when you find one snatch it up because it won't be there long.I was actually interested in a model 457 and when the guy behind the counter went to put back the 457 I bent down and saw this one crammed in the corner out of sight for the same price as the abused 457 at $379.Added a spur hammer and replaced the trigger play spring and she runs like a champ.Get questions and compliments on it at the range-they are fine weapons of yesteryear and funny thing is there are so many articles on how 1911's with short barrels are not reliable-I'd bet my life on this one
