S&W M1006 VS G20

This is my first post among this illustrious crowd – Hi.

I own and shoot Glocks in 10MM Auto. I’ve also hunted with them in the past. But right now I’ve got an inexplicable desire to own a Smith and Wesson Model 1006 10MM Auto. I’ve read numerous things about them and all say they are a fine pistol – Jeff Quinn of Gunblast even calls it the “sweetheart” of 100MMs, but offers no explanation of the statement. So while I’ve heard numerous good reports about the Smith, I’ve not read or heard of a straight up comparison to the G20. I’ve even posted in other forums tongue and cheek explanations of why the M1006 hasn’t any real advantage over the G20 and, other than being a classic, haven’t received reasoned rebuttal.

So, here I am, in the lair of those who know, asking the question: why, in practical terms, is the M1006 superior to the G20? Is it stronger? Is it more accurate? Does it handle the dirt and dust of a hunt better? Why is it better? Or is it?

I am stalking a couple M1006s at the moment, all of which are high dollar. But before I lay out the cold hard cash I’d like to know I’m getting a superior product. Please, enlighten me.

I've had both at one time and I would have to say I prefer the 1006. Both the S&W and the G20 are reliable and accurate; though I'd give a slight edge to the 1006. Magazine Capacity is higher in the Glock. I prefer the 1006 in the area of recoil and follow up shots; that's where having the heavier gun comes in! Finally, I'd have to say I give the 1006 the edge in style too.

Faol got it right...I'd take a 1006 any day of the week: accuracy, reliability, aesthetics, craftsmanship, you name it. I actually prefer the heft of the 1006 as well. I might be a little biased as I can't stand Glocks. While I and others like our Delta Elites, many feel the only appropriate platform for the 10mm are the 3rd gen Smiths.

In terms of finding one be patient and don't pay the over inflated prices that some are demanding. I was patient and waited for over a year. All of a sudden, I found one with adjustable sights and NIB for $700. Just found another with fixed sights for a smoking deal for $499 at a pawn shop. Everyone wants the XD's, Glocks and M&Ps these days...they can have them!

Be patient and check the gun websites and forums. If you can find one at a local shop that might be better in terms of price as many folks aren't into the 10mm.

Superior? I think more like equal but different. Stronger? I have yet to blow up either, despite some of my best efforts. My gut always leans toward metal as being stronger but my gut has misled me in the past. More Accurate? Perhaps a bit. These are both SD pistols with what I'd call good "combat" accuracy. I get better accuracy out of one of my G20 with a Jarvis National Match fitted 6" barrel that I've shot some gnarley rounds out of. Dirt and dust? Maybe slight edge to Glock, though I've never had a 10x6 fail due to such.

Since you already drank the 10mm punch, toss your hard earned cash at the 1006 and enjoy another platform!

I own both and for me the 1006 is more accurate.

Durability? they are built like tanks. Very tough guns that can handle the hottest of loads. (ok I have not seen nor tried every load available). They have tighter chambers and can handle loads that sometimes even Glocks can't. I believe there was/is a company called fox something. After a bunch of Glock 10mm kaaboooms they no longer advize the use of certain 10mm loads they make.

This is a personal preference but I find the steel Smiths easer to carry then Glocks. The weight doesn't bother me but the thickness does. With my G19 I can't sit still. Constantly adjusting my jeans and undies where as I can carry the 1006 all day and forget its there.

Glock does get the edge for mag capacity and no mag safety and a constant trigger pull. Overall you can't go wrong with either one

Bile, Welcome to the forum! I started my 10mm ownership with the S&W1006 March 1990, it is strong, has been very reliable and sexy rich looking stainless steel finish that has held up quite well. I still shoot it and test handloads for performance over the chrony from the 5" barrel.

I do carry the Glock 29 now, because I wouldn't want to give up my S&W if I were to have to defend my self or family during an investigation. Or have it stolen if I need to leave the weapon in my vehicle. At least the Glock 29 is more easily replaced should that happen.

Yes the S&W 10xx series is very dear to me and I enjoy them all for what they bring to the platform of my favorie cartridge!

Thanks guys. I suspect the 1006 is a tad stronger, and one of the reasons I've considered it. The 10mm nips at the heels of a sadate 41 magnum and I consider the 41 mag at the bottom for big game. So, being able to use full tilt Buffalo Bore ammo as a mainstay is attractive. I think the 10 ought 6 is up to that task. I'll keep my Glocks for urban carry. Again, thanks guys.

I am a big fan of the 10mm. I also have owned both S&W and Glock examples. You cannot help but be attracted to the mag capacity of the G20, but those extra rounds don't offset the size and bulkiness of the pistol. It is almost just too big. No doubt it handles the cartridge well, and with typical Glock reliability it goes boom every time. AND they shoot where you point them.

That being said, the S&W is a more comfortable platform in my eyes, and without question is a much better looking pistol. My favorite is the 1066, I also have a 1076.

I have to give honorable mention to the Delta Elite, being a strong advocate of the 1911 platform for many years it is a natural progression.

I traded my G20 for a G29, now let's talk about that little sweetheart...

It is truely a "little sweetheart," and travels with me wherever I go. It is compact, while still filling the hand, easy to point and shoot, and packing 10 rounds of fury, does a lot more than snarl when the striker hits home. A more compact handful of protection does not exist.
