I don't think you can blue stainless steel. Long ago, when Winchester first introduced the 220 Swift chambering in the Model 70 rifle, they made the barrels of stainless to resist throat erosion and give longer barrel life with the hot 220 Swift. Stainless wasn't in vogue then, so they iron plated the stainless barrels and blued the iron. As I recall, people then said the polish wasn't as good on the 220 Swift barrels, but as I've never seen one, I can't say for sure.

First trip to the range for qualifications with the just picked up from the gun shop on the way 645 convinced both the Lt and I that is was going to be a keeper. We went to to hang new targets after the practice session. Out of the kindness of his heart and "to speed things along" the Lt loaded all our mags for us. What he neglected to tell us was he had loaded an empty case in each mag. He watched as all the others worked to clear the resulting jams. Then he come over to me and asked if I had any jams. I told him I had several rounds that did not fire but no jams. He got a puzzled look and asked to see my 645. He loaded a mag full of empties, inserted the mag, and hand cycled it. It fed every empty case without a hitch.
Some body is going to call BS because as we all know S&W pistols, especially the early ones, are unreliable pieces of junk. But damn I often wish I had that one back.

I believe you jdh. My Shorty 45 will do the same. My Glock 19 won't, but my "old" Smith will and it will every time.

Mine won't. The feed ramp sits too high so that the empty cases catch on the bottom of it. But put any live round in it, and away it goes.

S&W 645
I bought one of these new back in the 80's with adjustable rear sight. This is one weapon that I kept through the years and don't know if I would sell at any price. It was and still is one of the best triggers for a stock pistol that I have come across. I have managed to keep it looking like new over the years and kept the original box for a long time but my wife didn't see the need in keeping it and tossed it while I wasn't looking. Unfortunately the box held the sight adjustment tool that came with the pistol so it's gone too.

645 Adjustable Sight
Been looking at all the posts an have seen very few Adj. sights. Here's mine with custom made PurpleHeart wood Grips made by sculpter C.R. Morrison of Montana. I pre-ordered this gun when they first came out and I believe I have one of the first ones shipped to Wyoming. 645.jpg

Sorry about the blurry pictures, I took these with my phone.

Model 645 Getting Scarce
when they first came out it was like the "second coming" and all the company & gun mags. could talk about. Fast, reliable, fed empty cases, etc. Suddenly they're like the proverbial hen's teeth to find. Always wondered what happened and what's it going to take to find another clean one? Any thoughts?

Back then, Smith & Wesson had a "Stocking Dealer" program where a "stocking dealer" was supposed to be able to get new models as soon as they were released. My Model 645 TAM00XX was shipped April 4, 1986 and in my hands on April 9, 1986. The seemingly earlier serial numbers mentioned above suggest that maybe the program did not actually get the first guns in the hands of "stocking dealers."
