OK-I'll prove how dumb I am--What makes a S&W 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or whatever generation... I only have 2 S&W Semi-autos that I bought back in 94, they are PC 3566s, fired one of them for the 1st time about a month ago, I don't have a clue as to what is what Gen. ...lol...
So, could someone explain what makes one a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, Gen. ...???
Thanks and have a good one...XPman...
There are exceptions but the easiest way to tell is the number of digits in the model number; 1st 2, 2nd 3, and the 3rd gens had 4 digits.
Models 39, 52, 59 are first gen.
They added a firing pins safety and rear sights adjustable for windage and elevation (or fixed sights) for the second generation. They were also available in different materials.
There were 23 changes made to the pistols to make them a 3rd gen but the most obvious are an integral barrel bushing and the one piece wraparound grip.

Thanks, snw19_357, that's exactly what, and really all I need to know...
Again, thanks and have a good one...XPman...
