Default 3913LS first impressions

OK, this has been on the wish list for a very long time. Recently things came together and I was finally able to check that particular box. (I had been saving my lunch money up for a SIG P239 SAS Gen 2. Oh well. Maybe next year.) First, the obligatory pictures:

It was purchased as "New, unfired" from GunEnvy in Columbus, OH. I couldn't be more pleased with the transaction. As for the range report, there were no surprises. I fired 150 rounds as follows:
50 – Federal 115-gr FMJ "W-M Special"
50 – Winchester Ranger 147-gr truncated FMJ RA9147FMJ
50 – Dave's handloads (Dave is a friend that throws me a box now and then in return for all the brass I save for him. These particular loads, for those interested: 115-gr FMJ over 4.4 gr Hogdon Titegroup; High 1142, Low 1128, Avg 1135, SD 5.09, extreme spread 13.74; I forget what he was running when he chrony'd these loads, but IIRC it was a G19.)

There were absolutely no issues with function; throws brass high right about four o'clock 4-5 feet out. Muzzle flip is maybe 3-4 degrees and slightly left. The Federal 115s were a bit snappy, the Ranger 147s had more of a "push" but felt more manageable; naturally, Dave's handloads were pretty pleasant to shoot. My overall performance with this can only be said to be "minute of bad guy." It didn't turn me into Jerry Miculek or anything, but I'm certainly no worse with it than I am with anything else. I won't embarrass myself with pictures of targets. Overall I'd say it's a keeper. Of course, if I can teach Mrs. MK86FCC to rack the slide using the "push method" I'm pretty sure I'll have lost it, but that's OK. (The daughter hasn't seen it yet, either. And I think I might be better off keeping it that way. )

I'll probably look to putting night sights on it at some point. Right now I'm leaning toward TruGlo TFOs, but we'll see. And I'll probably contact S&W to get one more "pinky extension" magazine base plate. One drawback - holsters. Because of its profile, there aren't a lot out there to choose from. I have an Old Faithful kit on order, but I'd really like to have an OWB for it as well. I may - may - shoot the OFCC F'n'G at TDI this April 1st with it.

Edit to add:
As I look at the pictures again, it occurs to me it would be sort of cool if they made mag base plates that matched the grip's color.

Yet another ETA:
Forgot to mention, firing included modified-Weaver, strong hand only, and weak hand only. Curiously – or maybe not, I dunno – one hand shooting produced better results than two hand. I must ponder this some.

I'll trade you a pinky floorplate for your flat, straight up.

Of my ten or so mags, all but one have the pinky rest. And I prefer the flat :-/ I seem to be able to find deals only on the pinky mags.

PM me if you're interested.

Very nice! And what a sweet find too. Congratulations on knocking another gun off that wish list. Somehow mine just keeps growing no matter how many guns I buy.

You know you could just Duracoat or even Krylon those basepads to make 'em match.

Yeah. Every time I get something it's "OK, that's pretty much it." That lasts maybe a few days if I'm lucky.

Huh. Good point. I didn't even think of that.

OK, thanks. I guess S&W isn't going to answer an email (sort of surprising), and it's not important enough to me to request/pay for a letter. Sometime along late '98 through '99 is close enough for me.

Edit to add:
Just did get an email response. They say it was mfr'd in 2000.

This Don Hume fits well and is comfortable.
My LS is very accurate out to 50 yards with Rem UMC 115 JHP
and Black Hills 115 JHP --- These shoot right to POA at reasonable distances.

Great find. I'm jealous, and wish I would have traveled down to Columbus before you went up that way! Good for you though.

re:Holsters. Contact Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather in Montana and see if he has a blank for it. Tim made a custom holster for my 4014, and it rivals anything by Sparks or Rosen (the guy that referred me to Tim has Sparks and Rosen holsters, and now prefers TT's.)

Tim made mine for a very decent price, and it was very fast from a total time from order to me receiving it. I won't even tell you how fast, because that might not always be do-able for Tim.

The TT Gunleather holster shown is the Brown & Black on the right with the black 4014.

Huh. In addition to what you folks have provided, I came across this a few minutes ago:

Stoner Pancake Holster [Pan] - $53.00 : Stoner Holsters, The Right Holster for Your Gun

Included right there in their product list - S&W 3913 Lady Smith (28-1LS). And at a price that's easy enough on a retired Chief's wallet! Oh - and they're practically local for me.

Excellent find and a good buy. I love my 3913NL and find that that is my go to gun more and more rather than my Sig 228. Good luck with it.

I've carried my NL as a uniform duty gun for several years. Perfect for this old-schooler. Going to switch back to a revolver, but that's for another thread.
By the way, it's a VJA19xx... can anyone look that up please? Thank you!
