Don't know why you need a new barrel, however your 4006 is a third generation gun with a lifetime warranty. Before trying to buy another barrel I would have S&W take a look at your gun first. If there is a defect or problem with your existing barrel they may replace it as they have done for me with a cracked chamber on a LEO trade in gun.

To answer your question, no... there is no difference beween the two when it comes to the barrel.

Thank you both for your reply
The muzzle does not look uniform at the crown and visually rough ,shots are all over the place at 5 to 7 yards . My 4516-1 is a great shooter!
I will contact S&W
Thanks again

The standard 4006 barrels are not the same as the 4006TSW barrels.
As I recall, after discussing it with one of the repair techs, the barrels of those two models differed in at least the dimensions & thickness of the barrel hood. I was told the standard 4006 & 4006TSW barrels were not considered interchangeable.
If you believe the barrel is defective, you might try calling S&W and inquiring about having it examined as a possible warranty issue. Bear in mind that the limited lifetime warranty, once it became available to commercial owners, was actually applicable to the original purchaser. Different folks have had different experiences when trying to have a used gun repaired "under warranty".
Whether or not they have any remaining repair barrels available for the original M4006 model is another question to be addressed. I was told they were having to modify (laboriously, by hand) some 4006TSW barrels for some early CHP M4006's that developed cracked barrels back about '04-'05-ish.
Wouldn't hurt to call and ask, though.
What ammunition were you using in the 4006?

Contacted S&W from website and got a shipping label emailed to me.
Shipped the 4006 off and received a letter from S&W stating that repairs run 2-3 weeks , I should have it back in a week or two . Can't wait.
Thanks again for everyones help.
Scott
Will follow up again on how it shoots when I get it back

I should have thought to ask the OP about whether of not he had an earlier issue 4006 CHP.
I have an early 4006 furnished to the CHP and the CA State Park Rangers. The CHP adopted the 4006 around 1990, that was pre TSW.
So aside from the lack of a trigger free play spring and spurless hammer on those CHP 4006's, wouldn't the barrels still be the same?

Dunno. I never looked into that. Didn't anticipate ever having to service a CHP model (unless bought used). The only CHP 4006's I briefly saw were those in the hands of CHP coming through our range.
The parts list for the older M4006 shows 4 different barrels (incl OBS & revised), none of which are the same part number as that of the ONE barrel listed for the CHP's M4006, though. That's enough of a hint to make me want to call back and discuss it with a tech or engineer if I were going to be working with one and thought it might require a barrel replacement.
S&W has been known to make subtle modifications to large LE orders upon request. Things which don't always make it into the armorer manuals. "Never say never" with them and something interesting they might have done along the way.
FWIW, did you know there was a specific 9mm extractor (blued) in ONE 3rd gen 9mm that had a slightly longer hook dimension? Done as part of a mdoel-specific revision (due to slide mass difference). I didn't know that ... not until I was discussing a head-scratcher situation involved in replacing an extractor in an older 3rd gen (with a probable out-of-spec extractor recess), and the tech suggested I try the one extractor made with a slightly deeper hook reach. Really?
The CHP got the early guide rod revision, as I recall.

Question about 4006 (40 cal.) 1990's , ejector Bar.
09-10-2017, Has Anyone Heard of 4006 ejector Bars Breaking, from Slamming in the Loaded Magazine..? As I have a Never Fired 4006...and Don't have enough Info. ,on the Subject...I called S& W , but they were No Help...not Familiar with ejector Bar Damage on this Model...!! Also I was Told a Special Grind on the E. Bar would Prevent This...!! Anyone Know Anything I should Follow up on to Prevent Any Future Problems...?? Thanks.!! Bill Watson.
Post Note....When I mention the " Ejector Bar " - I may be Talking about the " Extractor" ,
Or similar Mechanism...as I am Not that Familiar with the Parts....that Can be Damaged upon Harsh Magazine Loading....I just Need More Insight / Info. On the Subject.

First, the barrels are different. The first 4006 had a small barrel hood on the first series A,B. The C,D series had the lg. Hood.also the cut for the recoil guide rod was really small. The TSW barrel has a lg. Hood with loaded chamber indicator, lg. Recoil guide rod notch, reenforced lower lugs , also delayed lock up area for the slide stop. So, unless your barrel muzzle is cracked.you'll probably get the same Barrel back. Hope this helps. CHP gunsmith
