Best S&W compact 9mm ever made?
I'm a great fan of the Smith & Wesson Model 3913 - in my opinion, the best compact 9mm Smith ever made; possibly the best 9mm discrete carry compact made by anyone.
First off, it's the right size. The single stack mag minimizes bulk, making it flat and concealable. The grip is "just right" for all but the largest hands, and the choice of a finger grip or flat based magazine enables tailoring the profile of the gun to its environment. Eight rounds in the mag and one in the chamber gives it enough capacity for most likely situations short of a horde of zombies.
Secondly, and perhaps most important, the little gun is dead-nuts reliable. With its ramped barrel, it will feed darn near anything in 9x19mm. It's sturdily built, and plus-P ammo will do just fine in it. Pull the trigger, and it WILL go bang, given good ammo.
Thirdly, it's darn accurate, too. Many experts have rated it at the top of its class for putting the bullets where you want 'em.
I like the lines of the "Ladysmith," with its sloped dust cover - certainly makes it a breeze to re-holster. With a stainless slide and barrel and an aluminum alloy receiver, it's pretty rust-resistant, too. Field stripping is a piece of cake.
I've only made two modifications to this 3913NL (no Ladysmith logo for us hairy-chested men). It sports a set of tritium night sights. Other than that I polished the feed ramp to a mirror finish - probably unnecessary, but it couldn't hurt.
If your cup of tea is a concealable 9mm semiauto, I don't think you could ask for better than one of these.
John

I have had a 5906 for about a year and acquired a 3913 just a few weeks ago. After putting it through its paces at the range, the 3913 quickly became my EDC. I still love my 5906 for the steel matches, though.

Agree 100% about the 3913/3914. Light, accurate and very reliable. My primary carry/nightstand gun. Also use it for BUG matches.

I really like my 3914, but I give a slight edge to my CS9 just because of the size difference. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong. My greatest worry about my CS9 is that my daughter may want it when she gets her carry license.

I agree completely!
I used to have a 3913TSW and traded it for something else.
I still kick myself in the *** for that!
So, I bought another 3913. I will never get rid of this one.
Damn fine handgun all around. Size, reliability and accuracy make it a "must have" if you like S&W autos.

Sorry, I'm not selling it. As I said in another thread, my greatest fear is that my daughter will like shooting it and want it when she gets her license. In which case I'll have to try to find another one.
The problem with the CS and all 3rd generation Smiths is that now that they are out of production people have figured out how good they are and want them. Two years ago they were all over the place and relatively cheap. Now, they are scarce and expensive.
Since I live in MA with our goofy gun laws, I can't buy one on line and have it transferred in. So, by and large the ones that are here are what we're going to have.

I really like my 3953 & 3914LS, but for whatever reason my 908 is the gun that goes with me most of the time.

I'll have to call mine a tie, 6906 or 908S for me. All the guns mentioned in the posts are great guns as well.

I gotta agree the 3913/3914/3953, were the BEST hideout 9mms ever made!
But I prefer the 669/6906, simply because it's easier to find mags for them.
I still think S&W lost there mind when they dropped the 3913 series, hell it was because of this pistol that SIG produces the P239!
Maybe this new "Shield" model will rectify the situation. Dale

3913 without a doubt for the best carrying compact nine.
And it does perform.

I have owned 6906s and 3913s and I prefer the 6906 but I don't carry or conceal. I like the thicker grip on the 6906.
They are both reliable and accurate and look good while doing it.

Since, arguably, the 39-2 is not "compact" (although it sure feels that way compared to my 4506) I can't use it as "best".
I would then say, immediately, that the 3913 is the best compact 9mm carry pistol made by anyone at any price, ever.

My 3913 NL is my nightstand pistol and is thin enough to make a nice concealable carry gun. One of the best S&W made. Too bad they were discontinued.

They are nice, but my vote goes to the 6906. Compact, great firepower and very accurate.

DAYUM, that was dumb!
Kidding, my EDC is a 3913TSW (prerail, 7rd). I stumbled upon it a few years ago at my LGS, used but in like new condition! Didn't look like the former owner ever shot it. Bore was pristine as was the rest of the pistol!
I'd never sell it and believe me, I've had all kinds of offers whenever I let people shoot it!
A 6906 is on my radar, because of capacity, but the 3913 has been glued to my hip for the past few years!

That's a tough choice. I have had a 3913, a couple of CS9s and a couple of 6906s. I find it very difficult to pick one over the others. There have been times that each was the best fit for the requirements of that particular day. They are all winners.

My 3953 is a great carry gun. Slim, stainless, and a trigger you can be sure of. It's like pulling a DA revolver every time.

I sold my S&W #908 and bought a #3913, and did not like it as well. I swapped the #3913. I had a #469 a while back that I liked, but it did not carry as easily as the #908 did.
If you like big, heavy bullets in a fine package try a #457.

Save for scarce 9mm revolver rounds. I've opened a 9mm factory fresh box of ammo just to find one or two bullets sunken just from shipping and handling. How did the 940 deal on the 4 remaining shots?

-...Actually the cs9, 40 and 45 are on the approved firearms roster. They're ok to bring into MA. Suggest you discuss with your FFL

I agree, 3913/14 great guns, function ,accurate, easy to conceal. But about 10 yearsago got my hands on a P/C 6906 and thats what I carry everyday. Same reliability, but a bit more accurate especially out at 25-30 yards.
However if they ever were to make a single stack P/C version (not likely today) It would get my heads up. Bob

I tend to favor my 3913 over my 6906 but then I have small hands and with the wider double stack grip I tend to push em to 7pm.

I was planning to get a 3913 but ended up with a 3953. I really like the 3953 but I'm still in the mood for a 3913.

I saw a 3913 at a pawn shop yesterday. It was "used" but plenty of life left. They wanted $390. Since I wasn't that familiar with that particular model I walked away. I am still looking for a good CCW semi. If they are as good as you say maybe I should stop back tomorrow. How about the price?

Really like the 3913(my 6906 is a very close second), and almost let this one go just recently on a trade. It's a pre-rail which makes it even better. I was just offered 650 for this gun and turned it down.

The deal was done, shop owner had the 3913 in his hand and was putting the key in the lock to the display case, stopped and said wait try this one, handing me a 6906. They were both is about the same condition but the 6906 had two mags and was $50 less. BUT it just felt so much better in my hand. I said "I'll take the fat one". He grinned and but the 3913 back. Come to find out he had just the one 3913, and was trying to convince himself he needed it for him, and 12 6906s. We were both happy with the deal.
Plus one for the 6906 followed closely by the M&P9c.

I love my 6906, but don't carry it as much as my other 3rd Gen Smiths. If I didn't have the CS9 and 3914, I'd carry the 6906 all the time.

I rate the 3913/14 series as one of the very best compact , single stack 9mm pistols ever made at any price.
Others that deserve a lot of respect are :
SIG P225, SIG P239,Kahr stainless all steel full size,HKP7M8.
