Default New to us M457

Hey all, Had a nice weekend. Went to a gun show this weekend looking for some mags for my SW40F. Didn't find any. Anyway my came along with me. She was trying to help find these mags. As we are looking around she say this gun S&W 457. and started to play with it. She seemed really interested in this gun. She has had here LTC for 20 yrs and i never saw her really interested in any. She shoots mine sometimes but really showed no real excitement. Well this one i guess was calling out to her. There were 3 of these at this table but only one had this white S&W trademark emblem on it. The other two had alittle less outer wear than this one and were $50.00 more. She lingered there and i asked her if she really liked it, and she said yes. Her birthday is this month ant i was planning on getting her an Ipad. So i asked her if she would rather have an Ipad or this gun for her Bday. I was shocked when she said the gun. Needless to say i wipped out the cash and she bought herself this gun. Today we went to the range to shoot it. We bought a box of american eagle 230. Her first five shots went way low. She started to think she made a bad buy. I asked if i could try. Loaded 5 rds and and aimed at the center of the target @ 15 or so yards and all 5 went just under the bullseye. She then new if she was not hitting were she was aiming, it was not the guns fault. So she proceeded to shoot and fine tune her aim. After 35 rds she was grouping great. shot 3 bullseye and around ten under and just to the right of the bullseye. When we left she was pretty happy with herself. This gun is definitely a keeper. Was wondering if anyone could suggest an adjustable rear sight and a new front sight.

The 457 is universally praised on this Forum. I have two. Maybe it's my less than expert shooting, but at the beginning mine shot quite low. Like 7" below the bullseye at only 7 yards. Half the problem was the shooter (me) not having shot a 45ACP before; anticipating the (supposedly harsh) recoil and using bad technique.

I tried several different ammo brands and bullet weights from 165gr to 185gr to 230gr until I found what worked best for me. Maybe it's the short barrel but mine seemed to have point of impact vary a lot with bullet weight.

Experiment and find out. The worst that can happen is you get to shoot a lot of rounds. Boy, that'd be a real downer.

I carry a 457S everyday. Keep the standard sights, they work fine.

I carry my 457 almost daily, great gun and easy to conceal. I had the same problem when I first got it, shot low and to the left. I went though about 500 rounds in different weights from different mfgs before I settle in on 185gr. I don't know if it was the ammo or grip. Now at 25ft she shoots to POA.

My daily carry gun is a 457. I think the sights are awesome, but I blacked out the rear sight. With enough practice she will do fine.
