Default Shorty 40 , Gems or not

My local gander mountain has a S+W refurbished shorty 40 for sale, it's original price was $1100 but has dropped to $799 in the last month. My question is can NEW ones be ordered and how much and is this worth $799. Are these performance center guns that sweet

These are no longer made. The Shorty 40 is an amazing firearm that is often overlooked except by savvy forum readers here like us. Hand fitted match barrels and very tight tolerances. Hard to say if it is worth $799. Current sales of Shorty 40's have been a little bit lower ($600-$700). I would be happy paying $799 for a minty model with original box and would not feel ripped off. I love my S40. There were several versions/series produced.

Here is a pic of my S40 equiped with trijicon nights and a Rosen ARG

If need a compact, .40 cal, double stack gun, and you want it to be made of metal, I don't think you can find anything better.

The Shorty 40 is by far my favorite 3rd gen auto, I've got 2 of them, one still new in the box. You can't find a better double stack compact. PC guns are indeed as good they say they are.

Orangehole, I thought I was the only one that likes the ARG, I've got two of them. One for my 4003 and another for my Shorty.

Here's a sample of my 1st gen Shorty 40, like OH's with Trijicons

Cheers,
Sam

Yes, they are gems. My Shorty 40 MK3 is probably my favorite S&W semi-auto. One of the best pistols S&W ever made, in my opinion.

Sadly, they haven't been made in a good number of years - I think there was one last limited run in 2000.

Default Get it

So just which Gander Mtn is this gun at? Not that I would run there and offer the mngr $700 cash and run off with it and leave you scratchin your head if you should've gotten it. I'm just kinda curious. These are great guns and if you buy it and don't like it I will buy it from you for your purchase price. 100% guarantee on your money. Buy it, you'll love it. Once you get it you'll start looking it over and be amazed at what a high quality gun they are compared to todays plastic wonder guns. There is alot of handfitting on these guns and they are just plain nice.

Sam,
Do you have any trouble getting the barrel back into the bushing(slide)? I finally took mine to the range after 18 years and had some feeding issues. After cleaning it I could not get the barrel back into the bushing. I don't want to force it.

Thanks,
Bob

Plenty of oil on the barrel and bushing, don't force it, just play with it a bit and it'll fall in. I always tilt the bushing in at the top.

Which shorty forty is it? The original or the newer MK? The original had single stack mag (9 ) rds, SN range was 0-1500. I have PCS0573 +PCS0574. They have a front tritium sight and were purchased early in 1993. Be Safe,

Don't have the .40 (never been a fan) but do have 2 PC "6906/Shorty 9"in 9mm......... all I can say is buy it.....

If I feel I want/need more than a 3913 one of these is my EDC. backed up with a 15 rd. 5906 mag sporting the grip adaptor

You should be able to use the Smith Grip adaptor to use full size (11rd.???) .40 mags. ; should allow you to pick up some cheap used mags.

I made an "offer" to buy an S&W 952LS to a sales guy at my Gander and he was insulted, not at the amount, but at the fact I even assumed they would deal. He said it was for sale at the marked price and that was it. So I bought one somewhere else.

I have a Shorty Forty as well, how do I tell which generation it is. It looks like orangehole's and Shorty4T's. My serial number is PCS06XX. Thanks.

I'm no expert on the S40 but I own one, too. When they were first introduced back in the early 90's, they were pretty state-of-the art in the way of concealed-carry guns.

The info (as I understand it) is that 3 runs of the S40 were produced. Serial Numbers PCSxxx were the first production guns. Serial Number SPCxxx were the second run, with smaller amounts being produced. I'm confused about the third production run, in regards to them either being done up for Camfor or, perhaps they are the S40 Mk3S. I don't know.

There are subtle differences between the first and second production runs (eg: grip tang extended, horizontal checkering added to the front strap, color variations on some parts).

My S&W S40, "Windsucker" second production run, SN: SPC01xx

Back in Dec of 2011, I originally posted on this forum about my S40 and obtained much info about the various generations of this magnificent handgun. Here's one of the threads where some good info on the S40 is explained:

S&W (Lew Horton) Shorty Forty/Pic Added

I've been daily carrying my S40 ("Windsucker"...I give all my guns names in the hopes that one day the IRS will add a clause allowing them to be itemized as dependent-deductions. *LOL*) I'm currently using a Galco IWB Summer Comfort in the 3:30 position.

To the original poster, if the S40 is still available at Gander Mountain, scarf it up! Why? 1. It is no longer being manufactured. 2. It is a Performance Center firearm. 3. In 30 years from now, it can only be worth more (condition depending: Look at how much a stock Model 27 or 28 from back in the day is going for these days). 4. With the proper holster, it makes for a excellent concealed-carry firearm. 5. It is a fine shooting handgun and mine is VERY accurate.

You can increase the magazine capacity by 2 rounds if you buy the 11-round 4006 magazines.

CDNN Investments usually has used 4006 magazines at great savings. You can find the floor-plate adapters from Robinson's Trading Post or on eBay to fill the gap between the frame or, just use the 4006 magazine as-is for range practice.

On a side-note, since the S40 was built on a 6906 frame, the 9mm 6906 magazines may work in a pinch with a bit of judicious work. I wouldn't recommend using them as primary defensive carry magazines though. 6906 holsters will also fit the S40. A stock 4006 holster works but leaves a 3/4" space between the muzzle and the end of the holster.

Here's my S40 in a Minuteman 4006 scabbard:

'Hope this information helps you and others regarding this fine piece of S&W engineering.

I handled one of these at a local gun shop one time, such a nicely fitted pistol, the action felt like glass. I tend to prefer a standard hammer, but these were made to be more snag-free for concealed carry, I guess, so it's understandable. And I suppose you could put a standard 6906 hammer on one, if you wanted to. Definitely buy it if you like quality pistols.

The 9mm version would be great for those wanting a compact pistol in that caliber.

Default Shorty

I have a 4013, and one converted to a 1013, but I still wanted the double stack. Looked for 4013TSW, looked at Gander, as they have a shorty forty 2000, but $1149 was to much so I kept looking. Found this one, I think I got a heck of a deal, and saved enough money to almost buy another This will make my 3rd PC gun, and if as good as the first 2, it will become my primary carry piece.

Sadly, my Shorty was a dud. I bought it new, sent it back to S&W and it was still unreliable. Very touchy about grip and ammo. A friend bought it from me and he had no luck with it either.
