Default 9mm Defensive rds what do you use

The summer is here and I am switching back from my 4566 to carrying my 659 and 5946 and was wondering with all the different ammo out now is it all about the bullet or is speed the king "ie" +p or +p+ rds.I am currently using some vintage Win silver tip hp 115gr.That I have had for years, but am now looking at grizzly xtreme and the glaser +p blue, any thoughts would be appreciated,as its time to get with the program.

I use Winchester Ranger 147 grain JHP out of my 3913, the only 9mm I still use.

It is very accurate out of the 3913 and has a good track record with west coast LE agencies.

IMO you should use any 9mm JHP round that you can shoot accurately and get quick, accurate follow up shots with. I wouldn't worry too much about +P or +P+. A standard velocity round will be sufficient - if you do your part - and have less wear and tear on your pistol. I am from the shot placement school though. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Any of the major "defense loads" are fine. I use Gold Dots.

I don't think much of the overpriced specialy loads, especially in 9mm.

I thought we'd already talked this to death in a dozen different threads, but to answer your question I completely and totally agree with 18DAI.

Winchester Ranger 147gr JHP, used in my 908, 910, or 39-2.

Remington Golden Saber 147 grain is the most accurate, BY FAR, in my 9mm S&W pistols.
the 124 grain comes close.

Just out of curiosity, why would you switch from the 4566 to the 5946 or 659 for summer carry? I would imagine that if you can carry either of those 9mm's, the 4566 is the same size and probably similar weight.

But since that wasn't an answer to your question, I carry Golden Sabre 124grain+P JHPs.

I agree, why people think novelty loads like, Glaser, Magsafe, DRT are anything but marketing hype amazes me. They have been shown to be ineffective, even Double Tap has been exposed as not performing as advertised. I can't speak for all of Buffalo Bore's products, but the "low recoil" loads are BS too.

The smart play is to buy known, established manufactures with proven results. IMO.

The 659 is a little bit smaller and it is nice to switch things up and the 5946 is a new purchase that shot real well with fed 115gr fmj so it will leave the house with me some. What can I say it is nice to mix it up.

Well thats kinda why I still use the silver tips that were bought in the 80s and i still have a bunch of federal nyclads also.So it looks like there is a bunch of hype with the gun writers.

9mm ball will work as long as you hit your target its just technology has really exploded as far as bullet design and function in the last 10 years.

9mm ball is like stabbing someone with an icepick. It sure hurts, but it doesn't really do much damage unless the CNS is hit.

Underwood ammo loads the 115gr. Speer Gold Dot to 1400 fps (comfortably in .357 Sig range) in 9mm. People online rave about their loads, and prices are fantastic.

Underwood Ammo Web Site - Home

If you want something that shoots comfortably, look for the 147 grain Federal HST in standard pressure.

Test of the 147 gr. HST here:

Same here. RA9T penetrates as well as some .40 and .357 sig from what I've seen. Sometimes less is more...more often than not, it's more that's more imo

I'm stuck in the 80's, I guess, as I still load up with Federal Hydra-Shok. I think, though, looking at newer ammo technology, I'd be inclined to go with Hornady Critical Defense, which is what's in my hide out .380.

Still carry department approved / issued Federal HST 147gr.

Great performance in an urban environment.

I used Hydra-Shok for nearly 20 years but now it's Winchester Ranger T 147 grain in my 59. I use HST in my Sig P239 as it seems to run better. Take it for what it's worth but the two largest PDs in California shoot 147 grain rounds and they've been getting excellent results in the real world for quite a while.

It should be mentioned that Hydra-Shok also has been made in a 147 grain loading, although the 124 grain stuff seems to be more common.

The first thing you want to do is get rid of those Silver Tips. Keep in mind that in the great Miami FBI shootout, they discovered that one of the problems in that shootout was not the 9mm round but the Silver Tip round itself. It was designed to not penetrate properly because over penetration was a huge concern at that time. As a result the bullets that the bureau used stopped just short of hitting the heart of,IIRC, Platt. The bullet did what it was supposed to do, but that was simply not enough. Any one of the rounds manufactured today by the major manufacturers such as Winchester, Remington, Federal etc are all good performers. I carry the Ranger 147 grain and I can tell you from personal experience that it works just fine.

My 9mm is loaded with 15 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr. Yes, ball ammo can certainly do the job, but in the heat of the moment I want to make certain every shot has the potential to be the "take down shot."

Hornady Critical Defense 115...really I am shocked, I am the only one?

I do have a friend who got hit the leg with 9mm ball ammo at close range...almost lost his leg and didn't walk for a year..really not sure I would want to be hit with any bullet type.

Currently carrying Hornaday 124 gr. Tap, but plan on replacing those with 147 gr. Gold Dots in the near future.

I currently use Hornady Critical Defense 115 in my HD and CCW weapons. Oddly, on some forums I've caught flack for my choice. Seems like some people simply don't think highly of Hornady (or maybe it's just because of them and their marketing of the Zombie Max ammo).

I've treated a significant number of shot people over the years and except fof the ones who were dead or unconscous they've all said it hurt like heck. Based on that I recommend against being shot.

I really like 9BPLE Federal 115gr +P+ in my Beretta M9 and Sig P239 but it's not my only choice. 124gr Hydra Shocks and 147gr Gold Dots work very well. I have the P239 loaded up with Gold Dots on my hip right now.

Default 9mm Defense

I use modern day 115gr silvertips. The local Cabelas always has a good supply. I disagree with Big Daddy. SA Dove's silvertip was an older design.
I have chronographed a bunch of standard pressure 9mm loads and the silvertip routinely has the most velocity. If you are looking for aheavier bullet then its not the proper choice but for summer carry the 115gr will do the trick.
I have found it to be an extremely accurate round and it works with utter reliability in my glocks, M&P's and Berettas.

I have my 39-2 loaded with Remington Golden Saber 124 grain, standard velocity since it's an older gun.

I have been in the unique position of having USED 3 types of 9mm ammunition in defense. The Hydra shok 147gr worked very well. I like how the 124gr shoots a bit better, but for sheer performance, the hydra shock did extremely well. The bullet retained nearly 100% of its' weight and penetrated a glass barrier and penetrated far enough to stop the situation. I carried Speer lawman for several years, and did use it once. 124gr. Very good ammunition, it held together pretty well thru bone.
The last ammunition I used was Remington Golden Sabre. VERY dissappointing performance, in respect to penetration and retained weight/ construction. The bullet fell apart within less than 6" of penetration. Yes, it did its' job. But there was no major bone structure to break on the shot, and once thru the passage it took, it should have been well into the lung cavity- that did not happen. The maximum any part of the bullet that penetrated was just shy of 8 inches.

Back to the Federal ammo, for keeps.

Summer: Gold Dot 124gr +P! Dallas, Chicago, Denver, NYC and others must like them enough to use them...

Winter: Federal 147gr +P HST. Check You Tube with TN Outdoors: They were mushrooming to .78

I am a believer in the 'new' 9mm loadings. Much of the .45 vs. 9mm is moot nowadays. The modern loadings of the 9mm have been making evil men permanently good at the cyclic rate.

The Gold Dot in my opinion is one of the top loads. I also hear that the Ranger T is very good as well. It has had some failures. From what I understand, the Gold Dot (in the NYPD loading) has been doing quite well.

18DAI is spot on (as usual): Shot placement IS the key...

If you are really interested in this, go to Youtube and watch the videos by Tnoutdoors9. He has tested most of the rounds mentioned in this thread. I currently carry 147gr. HST, but Speer Gold Dot 124+P is also great. If you have a gun that favors 115gr. , then look into the Gold Dots.

Here is the 147 grain HST that I carry:

Here is the Speer Gold Dot 124+P:

Here is the Speer Gold Dot 115 in Standard Pressure (I am waiting for his 115 +P+ test). I like this standard-pressure round for low recoil in a small barrel:

Comet, the Silvertip did what it was supposed to do. Expand. But it didn't penetrate enough. Velocity has nothing to do with it. Weight really has nothing to do with it. It's bullet design that is important. We now know today that outside of shot placement, the single most important aspect of any bullet is penetration. The lack of it was amply demonstrated in Miami. God bless those FBI warriors but they were armed with poor ammo by todays standards. The bullets of today are far superior to the Silvertip. Even a slow 147 grain 9mm that penetrates at least 12 inches which almost all do, is much better than the Silvertip of yesteryear.

In my 3913LS, I use Rem UMC 115 grain JHP. It's 100% reliable, shoots exactly to point of aim and I can hit a grapefruit @ 50 yards with it.

It doesn't cost $1.00 a round and I don't feel bad shooting a bunch of it in practice.

I had no idea that was the bullets the FBI used in the Miami shootout.Looks like i will be shooting all that stuff up the next few trips to the range.
thx

Back in the day it was the rage. But then as it started becoming used more frequently we realized something was wrong as BG's just were not going down with this round. Then the FBI shootout occurred and an exhaustive investigation determined that it was a shallow penetrator. There are much better bullets out there today. The Silvertip is an ancient round. Why not get a bullet that is a better performer and gives you an edge.
