Shooting the 39-2
A few months ago I picked up a nice 39-2, made in 1980. It hadn't been fired much by its original owner. I love shooting it. It's probably my favorite gun, and I've put 600 rounds through it since December.
Now, my question is: how much should I shoot it? Should I place a limit on how many rounds I put through it each year?
I know it's an older gun whose parts are hard to come by. But if I had my choice I would take it with me to the range every time. I'm considering getting another 9mm to help ease the burden on my 39-2, but money is tight. Thanks for your advice.

I have not shot mine a lot though when I have it is accurate (no fault of mine). I had to rebuild the rear sight and got the used part from Numrich in West Hurley, NY

Shoot it to your heart's content. That's what it's for. Enjoy!!

The 39-2 is a tough pistol. Shoot it, enjoy it, and replace the minor things that do wear out as needed, mainly the springs.

I carried a 39-2 my first 11 years as deputy. It worked just as fine on day 1 as it did when they made me take that nasty Glock.

That's great news, thanks. I'll probably be shooting it 100 rounds per month, then. Any suggestions as to how many rounds I should go before replacing the springs? And which springs should I replace? I'll probably order them from Numrich in the near future.
See the pics attached. There's one with the original wood grips and another with the Pachmayrs that I use for shooting. Sorry about the glare, I'm not much of a photographer.

You talked about picking up a second 9mm IMO if you like the 39-2 you'll love the 5906. I've owned both, still own the 5906. You can get one for $300, use it as your work horse, and save the 39-2 for special occasions.
