I was going to sell my CS9D but a little birdy said not too.

I want a Shield Nina because I want one and holding my breath waiting for the email from Buds since July 2012 has got me blue in the face.

I decided to keep the CS9D but want to do a modification.

I dont like the plastic button mag release (nothing wrong with it...just dont like it) and some time back someone drilled the frame and installed a 3913 METAL mag release assembly.

I just went through 20 pages of searching....felt like waiting for that email from Buds....and cannot find it.

if you are that person or know the link....can you repost. I would like to discuss this mod in further detail.

I can't directly help you, but I'm interested in the subject. There was a recent similar thread about the magazine releases the Value Line series of guns. Those appear to be the same as on the CS 9 and someone wanted to change out the plastic one on his for the metal one on the regular 3rd generation semi autos.

Looking at diagrams on Numrich, it appears that the big difference is that the plunger has been eliminated on the Value Line and CS series guns. Other than that, the parts look identical, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Hopefully someone will come along to clarify that.

CQB, the little birdy is true. I bought a Shield a few months after they were released. Shields are great polymer framed pistols, far more ergonomic than Glock, and better than Springfield. There's just no changing the fact that all metal Smiths are built much more refined, fit to function, and a predictable craftsmanship involved in their construction. If you gotta have a shield then by all means don't let me change your mind. Just keep in mind, M&P series polymers have zero handcrafted fit and function. I shot exactly 42 rounds through mine. I showed it off to fellow shooter friends, compared it with fellow S&W 3rd Gen aficionado's at my range and anybody else who hadn't seen or held one. Then promptly sold it for what I had in it.

How could you miss it! Just kidding, I think I know what thread you're talking about, it was done to a CS45. I would also like to change the mag release myself.

thats it!!!! thanks.....I am not sure I have the right equipment to precision drill and I checked the original poster and he has not been on site for many months.

I think I will buy a mag assembly first to be prepared for that mod.

I backed off. too difficult and I dont have the access as inboost.

I did contact inboost who performed the services on the CS45. This is what he told me.

"""" I did all the work myself, but have access to a small machine shop and used a lathe to build a drill bushing and a mill to drill the holes to the correct depth. I would not advise attempting it with simple hand tools as you have to drill down a very precise depth and the drill breaks through the main mag catch bore which tries to pull it off course.

The CS9 is a different gun than the CS45, I believe the frame will be thinner. This makes my measurements and procedures completely suspect until you prove them to be suitable, so do any work at your own risk.

From my notes:

Drill the frame #37 (0.104") for the detent which is 0.100"

Drill off the center-line of mag catch by 0.145". I set the clocking to mimic the gun I studied, an old 659. Drill the hole 0.525" deep. This allows 0.105" of travel before detent spring bind.

Unless you're a machinist, and have access to the proper equipment, I'd leave it be, myself.

I'd guess you probably run rounds through your CS9, but unless you manage to find a way to snap off the mag catch nut, I'd not worry about it overly much.

I bought a couple spares sets of repair mag catch assembly parts for my CS9 & CS45 a few years ago, just in case I needed them. They're still sitting somewhere among the clutter of S&W repair parts out at my bench.

I've fired lots of rounds through my pair of CS pistols over the years, and I have yet to have one of the mag catches assemblies develop any problems. The plastic nuts, steel mag catch bodies and unique mag catch springs have all done as designed.

No reason to remove them from the frame for "routine maintenance".

Interestingly enough, I've had to replace mag catch assemblies in 3rd gen guns due to some spec/tolerance issues ... (including new production TSW's made within the last few years) ... but not in the Value Line/Heritage/CS guns. Go figure, right?

Just remember that if you ever intentionally remove one of the plastic mag catch nuts (buttons), they're a 1-time use (installation) part, and a new one needs to be used.

Also, if you ever come across a 3rd gen armorer manual, in the last couple of releases the picture used of the "exploded" plastic CS/Value Line mag catch assembly reversed the spring orientation in the manual picture. Oops.

The large end of the "tornado" spring should face the back of the nut, not the mag catch body.

Actually my CS9D has sat for over a year. I have switched over to Shield Nina but still on the fence if I like one over the other.

I wont attempt the mag release mod on my CS9D.

I mainly carry off duty the Shield, a Glock 19 or soon to be carrying a older Colt Mustang that was stolen from Walmart in 1986 and found on some drunk in 2006 in the same town. It sat in our evidence locker since 2011 because no one followed up if it was not clear on who the owner was. I called Wally World and since they no longer sold handguns, it was donated to our Dept and assigned to me. I ordered all new springs and typical Colt 1980s sloppiness but I will qualify and carry when I want something really small compared to the Shield.

Glad to hear you're doing well.

If I wasn't so preoccupied with being a grandpa the second time, and enjoying retirement, I'd have gotten off my butt and picked up a Shield 9.

I liked the one I used for an afternoon (belonging to another instructor who dumped a problematic LC9 for it).

It felt better in my hand than my 3913, had a surprisingly nice trigger for a little plastic gun, and let me clear a shoot-while-moving qual course every bit as fast, controllably & accurately as I could with my 3913, CS9, G26, etc.

Sleek, nicely slim & well balanced itty bitty 9mm that tracked very well in my hands from the very first mag load.

Surprising practical accuracy out to 25-40 yards on steel, too.

FWIW, I've asked a couple guys from the factory about using +P duty ammo, and the general consensus was that +P is okay, but NOT +P+.

As soon they're offering either a Shield armorer class, or an addendum to the standard M&P pistol armorer class to cover the Shield, I'll dig into it further. Last I heard, corporate legal hadn't gotten around to approving the proposed Shield armorer manual yet.

You'd sort of think that running .40 in the Shield 40 would mean they could probably get at least some of the better quality +P+ made for LE/Gov users to be considered okay for the Shield 9, but I go with their recommendations.
