Default Started Carrying my 539.Anyone else?

I've shot many cool double stack pistols. I even own a 5904 that's hiding in the safe as I type this.

Yet, I've got a metal, nickel finished 539 on my hip. I turn 26 next month, yet I just can't get behind polymer frame pistols. Perhaps this is straying into philosophical territory, but it seems like a crime to relegate my 539 to the safe.

The brain says Glock makes a 17 round pistol that's lighter.

The heart says an American icon should be used to defend my American life.

So, the old girl that's been around longer then me rides on my hip. Any other young grasshoppers here keeping the torch burning in a world gone made for strikers and polymer?

I'd say your taste in weaponry is exquisite. I too have no fondness for polymers. I've sold all polymers to buy more all metal.

I may not be a young grasshopper(more of an old roach!)but I share your views. I do have a couple of S&W polys;one of them I like a lot. But my 3rd Gens have pride of place in my range bag & in my heart!

I have a bodyguard .38 special,457 two tone and picked up a SD40VE about 6 months ago. I LOVE everyone of them! My SD40VE is probably my favorite right now. Dont carry my 457 much because it is still without a scratch on it. I like carrying the polymers more because they're cheaper, i care slightly less about damaging one of my polymers, and if something ever happened where i had to use it to defend myself and the police department take it in and damage it/"loose it" i would rather loose a poly and not a heavyweight that has been around for awhile

Chevythunder, I had the same reservations regarding my 539, what if the police seize it , etc. If that's the case, it means I just survived a gunfight;should I come out of it with the same number of holes God gave me I'll consider myself fortunate enough. You have to be alive to buy another gun.

I'm not young like you, but I don't really think age has a lot to do with being able to appreciate quality. I suppose I could be considered a traditionalist in that I own shotguns, rifles and pistols and not a polymer in the group. In 1987 I was on the range in Tucson AZ when a LEO friend of mine came over to show me his brand new Glock he had been issued. I had been shooting a High Power all morning and was curious what the difference would be. After about six rounds down range I handed it back to him and have never fired a plastic handgun since. I am sure they must have improved in the last 25 years, but I haven't been tempted to find out. BTW I still carry a 639 and love it.

Default S&W 3rd gen

I too am not as young as Silversmok3, but do appreciate quality firearms. I am the original owner of my 6906 and is my current ccw. Nothing compares to these quality guns and their reliability.

I have a 639 with fixed sights and a round trigger guard that I keep handy. It's a great shooter. I removed the lanyard loop and polished out the grooves on the backstrap and it makes for a slick carry piece. Fits the hand well...second only to the Browning Hi-Power IMO.

I have a 439 but it is just too hard to conceal here in Florida with the high temps and high humidity, the size and weight does not help either. I have adjusted to a Beretta Nano 9 for the summer. The 439 will come back out in the fall, late November here in FL.

As much as i love my SD, if i have to use they can have it. Ill gladly buy another one the older pistols are beautiful in there own way and i want to keep them like that. My 457 may not be a high dollar gun, but i like it the way is. Damage free, lol. Carry my polys everyday, carry my 457 on days i feel like it. We all carry different guns, just like everyone drinks different beer. Its whatever fits YOU

I'm an older guy (65) and love classic handguns such as the 1911, Hi Power, S&W double actions and my two S&W revolvers. I carried my Colt Series '70 everywhere from 1976 until a few years ago. I still love those pistols but have to say the Glock 23 and 27 now are my choice for self defense. It's just hard to ignore the Glock's size and weight along with reliability and capacity.
