Default Took my CS45s out for the first time and my (poor copy of) Bigdog grips.

I picked up a CS45s last week for $500 with 5 CS45 and two 4506 mags and finally got around to shooting it. All I can say is WOW. It shoots almost as nice as my fathers/my (he just doesn't know yet ) Gold Cup National match 1911 as far as recoil and darn near accuracy too.

Of course like most people who buy a CS auto I had to do something about the grips. Simply put they are too thick for such a nice packing pistol but being a cheapa** that I am, I just couldn't pop down $90+ bucks on a set of plastic grips, even if they are custom made.

So I ordered a 4500-1000 series straight back grips and they also arrived today so I set out to make my own. Bigdog, you are an artist and/or have an amazing level of patience. I butchered my set by second guessing my marks and drilled one hole pretty far off but they still work. Right now they are still not completely finished up (I need to finalize the bottom of the grips) but I am happy. Oh and if I ever buy another CS auto, I am just going to buy a set from Bigdog.

Here is a family pic of my last 4 purchases (strangely all S&Ws, no I didn't do it on purpose, deals just come in 3s, or 4s rather.)

I may be wrong but I don't think 4506 mags will work in a CS45 if that's what you were thinking.

The two 4506 magazines came with the gun, I know they aren't supposed to work but they do, somewhat. They gave me a few failure to feeds but they will work for playing on the range.

I have not tried them for function but I know for a fact that 457 and 645/745/4506 will fit and lock in a CS45.

I'm sure the other mags will fit but there are extra indentations on a CS45 mag body to keep the rounds in place during recoil. That would probably explain why the 4506 mags failed to feed.

The problem with the 4506 mags wasn't that the rounds were shifting but rather that they weren't shifting (up to feed). The first round would sometimes fail to feed in to the chamber if you inserted the mag with the slide forward then racked the slide. I don't think I had a malfunction after the first round was loaded. I need to swap in good mag springs and see if the FTFs persist.

Of course all of this is based off of my relatively light reloads, a 200 Gr SWC at about 780-800 or 870-880 FPS (I forgot which one is which) out of the 3.25" barrel. Heavier reloads or factory ammo may cause malfunctions I haven't had with the 4506 mags.

Default Alternative to big dog grips

There was a guy at the range with a CS45 who said he found an alternative to the big dog grips at about 1/3 the price. The grips appeared to be almost perfectly flat, checked with a slight thumb indentation. They almost look like the SIG grips.
