4006 Performance Center
Got to finally hold what I believe is a first gen, 4006 Performance Center .40 pistol today. It is the one with the heavier, polished slide flats on what looks like the 6906 frame. It had a 9 round mag, was very tight and looks to be unfired. It also had the narrow tabbed/barrel hood and a yellow barrel bushing. Asking price is $699.00...good buy or pass?

I'd definitely pay that for a PC gun.

I would buy one at that price if it is as you described.

Mike, this could be a pretty rare pistol, if it's what is described in the SCSW as "Performance Center .40 Compact" that was produced only in August 1994. Does it have a 4 1/4" barrel? Serial numbers are SDC 0001 to SDC 00207. Came with a 9-round and 11-round mags.
Even if it doesn't come with the box, I would say that the sheer rarity of this -- and the fact it's Performance Center -- would make the asking price a darn good one. (If you do have the box, product code is 170054)
EDIT: I was incorrect on this identification, as I was describing the Stocking Dealer Compact in 40 S&W produced for Lew Horton. Others, including Shorty 4T, correctly identified the pistol in following posts.

This sounds more like a Shorty Forty to me; model numbers were 4006. First generation serial numbers are PCS, second generation numbers will start SPC. Chances are it will look something like this:
Cheers,
Sam

Sam, it looked just like yours; nice pistol. Taught double action pull but with a crisp single action. They also had several other S&W autos there including a 1006 with adjustable sites for $799. It looked to be in great shape too. Sadly, my discretionary funds are less than that . Thanks to all, and PM or email if anyone wants to know the LGS where I saw them. Mike

IUFan, that's awesome! Glad I could help and they still had it; going to a good home I'm sure. As mentioned, it looked unfired (or fired very little) and the action was tight. Looking forward to the pics...
I'll add that the store you got it from is interesting, in that normal, common handguns are priced @ MSRP or higher whenever I've been there. Because of that, and the location of the store across town, I rarely go there for anything. Not sure they knew what they had...? Anyway, your gain. I think I'll stop in more often now.

I was wondering if you had seen very many of the Performance Center 4006 models with a 3 1/2" barrels? I just bought one in like new condition with the Original box and 3 mags, that should be here tomorrow. I bought it for a conceal carry gun, and since I hunt with a S&W 610 10mm, I can also shoot .40 s&w ammo in it. Have you owned or ever held a 4006 with a 3 1/2" barrel? Thanks!

If you are saying you can shoot 40's out in a 10mm, I respectfully disagree. Both of these calibers headspace on the mouth of the case so length of the cartridge must match the length of the firing chamber (within certain tolerances).

^^^^ What 427mach1 said...no 40's in a 10mm! I can't see how a 10mm could possibly chamber a 40 properly...the 40 is too short. That would be a kaboom recipe IMHO.

The poster said he can shoot 40's out of his 610 which is a revolver. It uses moon clips so 40 works just fine. Its like shooting 38 special from a 357 magnum. In an auto that would not work but in the 610 he mentioned it does.

I didn't catch the model number and the fact UPSCHEF was talking about a revolver either; I was still thinking 1006. I stand corrected!

You should absolutely buy it! Does it have the Performance Center seal on the right side? Also, is the barrel 3 1/2" long? If so, this is a very rare gun, and worth much more than the asking price. If not, its still a pretty good buy.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center 4006 3 1/2" barrel
Can anyone tell me how long the barrel is on the Shorty Forty? I just bought this really nice Performance Center 4006 with a 3 1/2" barrel ( as stated in previous posts), but I haven't read anything about a 3 1/2" barreled PC 4006 gun. I was told that there was only right at 250 guns made with that length of barrel, but I don't know for sure. It has Hogue finger groove grips on it, and the serial # starts with a PCS, which I know is the first series, and a probably 1992 mfg. date, but on this website, I have yet to read anything about a 3 1/2" gun. I took it out and shot it, and it shoots every bit as good as it looks. It came with the S&W blue box (without label), manual and all paperwork, as well as 2 extra mags, and all 3 mags and gun have the Performance Center seal. Any information that anyone can give me on the 3 1/2" model would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Mike, what you have is a Shorty 40 of the first series of about 1,500 pistols. For some odd reason, S&W called it the "4006 PC" in product literature even though it's a compact with a 3 1/2" barrel and is marked "Shorty 40" on a properly labeled box. Yes, it shoots great, and you will love it. Mags are plentiful, even if they aren't all marked Performance Center, and 40 S&W ammo seems to be as plentiful as most of the other popular calibers, and more plentiful than some.
