Hi, I'm new here and would like some advise on prepping ( if needed ) to my full size S&W 4506 no dash to handle .45 +P loads on a more regular basis ! The loads I'm wanting to use are equivalent to Buffalo Bore +P 230 and 255 grain loads and am not interested in using anything as hot as 45 Super ! I do have Wolff extra power recoil springs that go from 15 lb to 20 lb and have thought of getting a Sprinco recoil management guide rod system to help tame the faster slide speed but have not installed them yet and still using 14 lb stock recoil spring ! Any advice is appreciated for set up or experience with this pistol of using +P ammo on a more regular basis ! Thanks !

First I gotta ask, why? The 4506 is a pretty substantial piece and will take +P, more so than say a SIG P220 made prior to 91 and I'd suggest you go to an 18 pound spring, changing every 3000 rounds.
255gr.?! What in the world are you shooting? If penetration is your game just load 230gr. ball. And the newer 230gr. standard pressure rounds are doing very well in shootings. Dale

Why ? I want the 4506 to be more a field carry pistol than a self defense one ! I may carry it as a side arm when hunting thin skinned medium game with my rifle and take a shot if an opportunity presents itself ! I already know that heavy hard cast flat nosed bullets will do the job just fine on deer and it is legal in my state to use the 45 acp ! I use my S&W 44 magnum when it is the primary handgun for hunting without a rifle ! I feel I can control the 45 semi auto better for follow up shots if needed and have put plenty of standard 230 grain FMJ rounds through it already and some +P rounds as well ! I'm just concerned about keeping the pistol in good shape and not battering it when using more +P ammo !

Buy a 1006 or stick with the .44 mag you already own. Hot rodding the .45acp is just going to accelerate wear and tear on your pistol.

After a search , I am convinced the 4506 can handle +P ammo just fine ! I just installed an extra power recoil spring and the Sprinco recoil management guide rod to help control the slide velocity using +P ammo and going to see how it does functioning with both standard and +P ammo at the range soon ! There is about an 8% increase in pressure using +P ammo at about 23000 psi but many have said this pistol is built plenty stout for it ! I do plan (as I have been already) to shoot mostly standard 230 FMJ ammo through it at the range but want to sight it in for my +P field carry load ! In the 1006...10 mm ammo has a pressure rating of 37500 psi and isn't this pistol very similar to the 4506 ?
