Alaska State Troopers vs. Mounties
The other day, either the History Channel or National Geographic (don't recall which) carried a program about an annual competition between the Alaska State Troopers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
It appeared the Mounties were shooting 4586s, 4086s, 1086s or 5986s.
Whatever S&W double action 3rd Gen they were using, the Mounties outshot the troopers -- who had Glocks of some ilk.
Yeah!
Anybody know the true details -- as to what the Mounties were toting?
I found it intriguing in head to head, on the line competition, the guys carrying the old Smith double action models outdid Glock "perfection"....
(Heh, heh, heh!!!!!!!!!!)

According to the always-trustworthy Wikipedia
Mounties carry Smith 5946 and 3953's in addition to other brands of handguns (no Glocks, though).

There is a reason for this. The pistol is not used much in AK. People are only 40% of their problem.
Most calls where weapons are drawn AK officers have an AR equipped :-D
Now if they had competed with their service rifles :-D. The troopers would have annihilated them. lol

I might be wrong but I thought they carried model 22 Glocks in 40 S&W.

I Agree!
I've seen atleast one of the shows that said they used a 40 S&W especially if they have to dispatch a wounded moose or caribou. Additionally, it would be more energy than almost all 45 ACP loads.

The real irony, which nobody has commented on, is that the Canadian Mounties are using a quality metal pistol, made in the USA, and the US bases agency in question is using a plastic framed piece of garbage made in Austria

I have not seen the program in question, but many years ago during a conversation with a Performance Center gunsmith, I am pretty sure he said they did a run of Performance Center tack drivers for the RCMP pistol teams that look like the RCMP Service pistol, including the little horse marking, but with the accuracy of the PC match guns that used to dominate the PPC matches, including the spherical bushing, the PC rails, etc.
Either way, it should not be too hard for the S&Ws to shoot better than the Glocks under precision type scenarios (I am not talking about run and gun with huge targets relatively close up).

It would be most interesting for the two agencies to switch guns and run the competition again. But, so much for wishful thinking.

Aren't Glocks that are used in the states.....
......made in the states? I see two different stories on this. One says that Glocks in the US are made for foreign markets and the other says that Austria sends parts to Smyrna GA. to be assembled. Is some combination of this correct? Does Glock send parts to Smyrna to be assembled and sold to foreign markets? How many Glocks and how much of each Glock are made and sold in the US?

I'd have lobbied HARD for a 10mm of some sort -- including a special run of 1006s -- up in those woods (either Alaskan or Canadian...)

Yes. I recently pawed a USA made Glorp 22 at my local shop.
Also the SRT of the Mounties has theSIG P226.
An interesting side note, NYPD states the only pistol that's given them the least problems is the 5946...how about that! Dale

The AST gun is the Glock 22. They went through two generations of 4006s but had so many malfunctions during quals and training that they finally traded the 4006s for the Glock 22s.
During the competition they shoot a stage where they trade guns with the Mounties. The AST Commisioner participates as does the RCMP commander.
FWIW, the troopers usually win.
