Default 639 with odd serial number

Hello gents,
Buddy of mine finally scored a 639. That motivated me to pull mine from the safe. To refresh my memory on production dates, I opened "The Book", which said that all 639's had T serial number prefixes. Mine has an A prefix. The book also states that 1984 is first year of production while my serial number dates to 1982. I am sure somebody can square me away on this.
Thanks in advance for any help,
fuzzy

The first eleven guns were completed in 1982, serial numbers starting at A796,437. The guns were used for test and evaluation. Full production began in August 1983 at serial number A840,000, or so I have been advised.

Richard,
Thanks very much for the info, that is fascinating. To be more precise, my 639 is A771XXX. Funny coincidence, the early 639 my buddy just bought is A772XXX. That dates to around 1982 as your info shows, but earlier than the series you list. I guess more investigation needed.
all the best, fuzzy

Having endured a recent tongue lashing after suggesting that while "Book No. 3" is "an invaluable part of any S&W reference shelf" it nonetheless wasn't inviolate, this Forum member believes he must've hallucinated just now while referencing that part of "Book No. 3" which, on page 292, does not actually state a ". . . TAK serial prefix . . ." for the Model 639.

Rushing to his gun case to ascertain whether his own Model 639 rounded-trigger-guard copy likewise had a stamped ". . . TAK serial prefix . . .," this Forum member was further relieved to learn that his Model 639 serial number really wasn't actually enumerated "A838378" and that somewhere on the 639, perhaps inside the chamber or the sear's underside, one will find the ". . . TAK serial prefix . . ."

Learn something new every day.

Sorry, I looked at my notes again and I find that I gave you the information on the Model 469 not the Model 639. I have the 639 as introduced on May 24, 1982 with serial number A769,806.
