The following link will take you to step by step instructions on how to completely disassemble and reassemble the 2206 family of semi-automatic 22 pistols. In the course of following the instructions you find a trick that helps facilitate the process, please let me know and I will make an update.

Thanks to vigil617 for assisting me in obtaining the 2206TGT shown in the instructions.

<standing ovation> Bravo! Sticky!

THANK YOU skjos. Looking forward to the rest. Very nice close ups with highlights. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this fine project you're doing. Do they give out Gold Stars for meritorious posts?

Tell us about the TGT itself. Looks like I expect a couple of mine to look like inside.

I have a 622 and really like it. Due to the high cost of .45 ammunition, I qualify with it.

Steve, you are doing a public service of great value to all of us who enjoy these .22 pistols. This is top-notch work with excellent photography and descriptions. I second the motion that this thread be made a sticky so that it can be retained for reference by hundreds, even thousands, of Third Gen S&W .22 owners. Well done my friend!

What kind of shape was the crown of the barrel in? The pictures on the auction had one view that made it appear perhaps buggered-up, perhaps through use of an improper barrel-nut tool. How will you address any crown damage?

When I find the time to get it all back together I'll add an addendum to the post talking some specifics of the TGT model.

The muzzle did have some buggering, but the crown (where the rifled bore meets the end of the barrel) was OK. I will likely take it to a gunsmith, it should take about 5 min with a crowning tool to clean the muzzle.

Here is a pic:

I still need to finish the instructions, but I thought I would add some pictures of the 2206TGT to the OP now that it is all cleaned up.

Looking great skjos. You have to tell us what you've done so far and how you did it. Did all those light scratches come out, and how did you work on them? Did you buff it or what?
Thanks

The lighting in the pictures helps to hide the few scratches that remain, but most of the scratches were easily taken out with a grey scotch-brite pad.

While I would not recommend using scotch-brite pads on bead blasted surfaces because it tends to polish those surfaces, it does do a great job at getting light scratches out of surfaces that are already semi-polished. When using a scotch-brite pad, abrade in the same direction as the current finish, and make sure to use full-strokes for the final passes to provide continuity to the finish. Do not attempt to get out deep scratches as you will put a wave in the surface. If you are after deeper scratches it is best to sand the entire surface, which was not an option on the TGT because the serial number markings are so shallow.

Steve, tell us about those target grips on the 2206TGT...are they wood, or plastic that looks very much like wood? I understand that Herrets made a version of grips for this pistol, but information is kinda lacking and I wonder if the ones on yours might be some of theirs....

The grips are plastic with no mfg markings on the inside or the outside. They are the same profile as the black S&W grips that I have on my other 2206's; Numrich sales them as "728720 | SMITH & WESSON | 422, 622, 2206 | Grips, Black Nylon, Factory Original (Incl Dual Thumbrest)". I'm not sure if these grips are original or not, but they seem to be rare because I cannot find a google image showing the same grip style with a wood grain finish.

I believe those grips were from the factory. One of three styles that I have identified for the TGT. Two custom walnut styles. One has finger grooves and the other doesn't. I believe the plastic are the least common and I suspect they must have had some kind of supply issue. I'd love to know when yours was made in relation to the end of production. I wonder if the supplier had a minimum order that would have exceeded the number of units S&W planned to build before they discontinued it?

There are also plastic woodgrain grips like the regular walnut factory grips. You can tell the difference in photos because the plastic ones do not have the gold medallion. It's embossed just like the black ones. I know some of those grips went to export guns.

Finally all done with the instructions. Please provide feedback if you see a better way to get things done, or if you feel more explanation is needed on a certain step, or you find a typo or other error.

Thank you for taking the time to document the disassembly and reassembly process. I bought a new to me 2206 that needed a thorough cleaning of dried up oil. Plus, I added the thread adapter you utilized. The spring plate was something. Stiff. My fingers were sore a couple days afterwards but felt good to do it myself with your help.

For those of you interested, EWKArms has the barrel nut tool available for sale. Its essential for removing the barrel nut on the 2200 series and 622 series vintage S&W 22 autos. They also sell the thread adaptor that turns the factory thread to 1/2x28. You know for uh.... Muzzle breaks on a 22LR, right? Or maybe a thread adaptor for 'solvent catchers...." :D

I Have Nothing Constructive To Add but.......

Just a couple observations..... I have never seen a target Vent Ribbed variation of any of the models in person, even the target sighted and fixed sighted versions are or have been seldom seen during my visits to gun shows and local gun shops. The Models 2213 & 2214 are even less often observed.

Another observation is...... When I have seen the Wood (Walnut) grips they have been on the Model 422, which, in my mind, was not the top if the line. I think the Vent Ribbed Target versions better qualify as the top of the line. The M-2206 target sighted pistols would be my personal opinion if the vent ribbed versions were not included.

Again, my appreciation for the interesting information contained under this topic.
