SCORE! Lucked into a nice 3953...
Unbelievable: while I was standing at the counter of a LGS this afternoon, chatting with an employee, another employee walks up with a customer to finish the paperwork on a trade. The trade-in? I had to look twice… yup, no doubt about it. Had both magazines too, all in excellent shape. An hour later, it was mine.
Anyway, I need some more magazines. I placed a WTB ad in the classifieds, but if anyone has a clue where to find some, I'd appreciate the tip.

That's her… except mine has a forged/milled trigger, I believe.

Very nice find. Best of luck on the mags as they are hard to find right now. I only have two for each of mine with the exception of the 4 I have for the 3913TSW that are 7 rounders. The 3953 or 3954 is the only 3rd gen I have left on my list except maybe a 3914 if the right one came along. There are other 3rd gens I like and may get one day but the 3953/54 is the only one I'm actively watching for. I have never actually even handled a 3953 but love the idea of DAO and slim profile. How is the trigger re-set compared to TDA? One of the things I like most about the TDA 3rd gens I have is the wonderfully short re-set so just curious.
Enjoy and we look forward to a range report!

In the past month I have seen a 3914 for $379.00 and a 3953 for $449.00, IIRC. S&W DAO pistols are not popular in my area, therefore I feel the 3953 was $100.00 too high. The shop disagreed with my offer, but they still had the gun last week.

When I am searching for magazines, I will snap a few photos of a given mag lying on a dollar bill and store the pic in my phone. Then, when digging through a box of miscellaneous mags I can look at my photos and note the length, follower design, and which side the mag catch notch is on.

My LGS has two 3953's and a 4053. The Smith DAO's don't seem so popular around here.

I had one of the 3953TSW's a while back, got it in a multi-gun trade.
I sold it because it had the bolt on rail, which I absolutely hated. Wouldn't mind picking up a pre-rail 3953 today, though they're quite rare around here.

You are welcome! Another forum member helped me with a 457 magazine and still others have worked with me on purchases so I could add nice S&W's to the collection. Just paying it forward.

Now's a good time....
Now's a good time to look for the mags. Past months i would have said, "Forget it for now." but lately I've seen them popping up here and there.

You should. I have only one 5900 series (5906TSW) and 16 mags. I think it's about time it learned to share.

Yes, but I acquired the 3953 to fill a narrow niche. I normally tote larger-caliber plastic guns (HK), because they are basically bullet-proof and parts are readily available if one should break.
A second 3953 would serve primarily as an organ donor...

OP, the shop I sent you the name of had a sale last week, that 3953 would of been 10% off, IIRC. If you call ask about the sale, you might get a better price.

Very nice! Congrats! I have always regretted the 3954 that I traded off back in the early 90s.
