New Member Here!!!
Hi All,
How's it going? I just picked up my first S&W over the weekend at a local gun show. I traded my basically new Taurus PT145 Pro and 100 bucks for an SW99, I realize it isn't new and am asking for any help I can get on how to get the most from this unique, "new to me" pistol. From the reviews I could find on it it's a high quality pistol and predecessor to the M&P...It is the straight up, plain Jane SW99, but appears to be in very good shape. I noticed she has quite the "bark" firing 180 gr PMC. It's accuracy is very good and I'm wondering if I can get some info and advice on what ammo works best and if magazines are interchangeable with either S&W or Walther models. Can anyone tell me the age of this pistol? SN-SAB3928...Thanks in advance for the help.

You'll find that the SW99 series is considered an undervalued pistol for what it is. These filled a niche prior to the introduction of the short-lived Sigma series, followed by the M&P line of polymer pistols. I think you'll be very pleased with your choice, and yes, that little dog will "bark" in 40S&W.
The Third Generation S&W's are all-metal pistols that preceded your SW99 in the Eighties and Nineties, and you might get the itch to try one out once you've become more familiar with the Smith & Wesson line. They are classics in form and function -- at least in the opinion of most of those on this thread! Seriously though, we tend to be a loyal bunch to this group of S&W pistols, and if you decide to test the waters, do yourself a favor and read some of the threads here about the different models.
Welcome to the Forum, and thanks for your service in the US Army!

Welcome to the forum!
I haven't shot a SW99, but both of the Walther P99AS I've shot are the best "plastic" pistols (sorry 18DAI.) so if it's anything like the Walther you have a very good pistol on your hands.
As for the Walther magazines working in your SW99 I'm not sure...since it was a joint venture with Walther I'd think you could, but I'm not positive. I know the magnum research MR9 magazines are the exact same as the P99 magazines.
Vigil617 is right you will probably want to look into the other S&W pistols, the 3rd gens being my favorite.

Welcome to the FORUM from Ohio! As was mentioned, Smiths tend to multiply. (especially revolvers) I got a 5906 in a trade earlier this year. Really like it. Any .40 that I have shot does have the recoil factor. My 3rd one is a keeper (the others are gone) FNH FNP. really like it. I have no experience with the gun you picked up. I am not a Taurus lover. (except my 990-.22.) You are on the right track Grasshopper! Bob

Welcome from NE Ohio and Alpharetta, GA!
If as one member above suggested and you look into the 3rd Gen metal pistols, and happen to be married; keep a private stack of 20's and Benjamin's hidden away, and also discover which GunBroker.com dealers do layaways.......
You will start buying several, and it can help keep the peace in the family if she doesn't see 3rd gen purchases showing up regularly on your MasterCard Bill.....
Not that I don't wear the pants in the family- but it saves a lot of time if you don't want to justify it when they perceive there are other priorities after you have several already.....
Also a great place to find nice 3rd gens can be here in the classifieds, and also at some Local Gun a Shops (LGS's).
You've now got a nicer pistol than the one you had I believe for sure.
