I'm sure I forgot a few but here's the ones I remember.

1006=full size frame, 5" barrel, DA/SA.
1066=full size frame, 4.25" barrel, DA/SA.
1076=same as 1066 but with frame mounted decocker.
1046=same as 1006 but DAO.
1026=Same as 1076 but with 5" barrel.

Hope this helps. :)

EDIT: Ah, 824tsv beat me to it!

Thanks for posting the 10mm models.

I am going on the hunt to find a S&W 10mm. Since you dont see these 10mm up here in the Mts, I am going by the S&W Model Decoder;

It appears that the 1006 is standard, meaning TDA (DA/SA). Does that also mean it has the safety/decocker ?

Model 1026 decodes to standard w/decocker. Does that mean decocker only, no safety ?

Model 1066 decodes to standard, non standard Barrel Length (what BBL Length) other than that it appears to be the same as Model 1006 ?

Model 1076 decodes to be standard, non standard BBL (what Length) and decocker, no safety.

Based on the above, it appears that the 1006 best equals the features as found on my 4516-2 and 5904....such as TDA (DA/SA) and Safety with Decocker.

Have I figured this correct ?

I have never fired a 10mm. Is the recoil equal to a lightweight 45 or above that using factory rounds

Thank You

1006 5" barrel slide mounted safety/decocker DA/SA trigger.

1026 5"barrel frame mounted decocker(like a Sig) DA/SA trigger

1046 5" barrel DAO (very rare only 151 made)

1066 4.25" barrel slide mounted safety/decocker DA/SA trigger

1076 4.25" barrel frame mounted decocker DA/SA trigger

1086 4.25" barrel DAO also rare around 1600 made

Many Thanks to all for the replies. I am now straight. First Choice is the 1006, second is the 1066.

This is a S&W 1006. There was a version with adjustable sights too. I replaced the straight backstrap stocks with the curved backstrap stocks.

The only picture I have of my former S&W 1076. I did not like this gun. The decocker was huge, not designed well at all. I could not hit very well with this gun either. Traded it off for a nice S&W 65-5, which I still have.

Thanks for the comparison. I am not recoil sensitive, but was curious.

Recoil exceeds that of an alloy frame .45 ACP. Not unmanageable, but you need to hang on to it when you pull the trigger.

Thanks for the picture....beautiful piece. Te 1006 is it.

I am a big fan of the 10MM Auto cartridge and it's big brother the 10MM Magnum.

The first S&W 10MM I fired was the 1076 back in the 90s when the Miami FBI office started doing the transition training. I do not appear to have a photo of that one on my computer.

However I have a Kentucky State Police 1076 that is photographed. As you can see from this image, the decocker pistols do not have the traditional slide mounted safety/hammer drop lever that is on other S&Ws. Just the frame mounted decock lever similar to the SIG P220 design.

Having been carrying a P220 for 15-18 years at that point, I liked the frame mounted decock lever and had no problem with it.

I need to re-photograph this one...sorry

I eventually bought myself a 1006 for the longer barrel. 10MM really shines in longer barreled handguns (I have several other long 10MM). Mine is pictured here wearing Brazillion Rosewood Hogues. These are actually the first set of 3rd generation wood grips Houge produced. They were on a 4506 at the SHOT show in Dallas, but they went home with me.

While not as accurate as my old Delta Gold Cup, I find the 1006 to be a fairly soft shooting 10MM pistol. The only 10MM that shoots softer is my Mauser M2.

If you can comfortably shoot alloy framed 45s, a stainless 10MM will not be an issue for you.

You should finish filling out your profile, we do not know where you are.

If you are located in South Florida, I would have no problems letting you shoot some of mine so you have first hand experience. If you are not in South Florida, there might be a fellow Forum member in your area willing to make the same offer.

The most common ones by far are 1006 and 1076 IIRC. The Kentucky State Police adopted the 1076 shortly after it was adopted by the FBI and kept them for quite a few years longer. It used to be somewhat common to see 1076's with the KSP logo at gunshows here in KY, but they have dried up as the collectors and enthusiasts have begun hoarding them.

I have a 1086 that I just happened to pick up by luck way back in the mid-90's, a 1006 that was obviously a police issue gun with terrible finish wear but is still extremely accurate and functional, and a "Frankengun". The Frankengun is a 1076 frame I found at a gunshow mated with a 1066 top end I bought off eBay. It's a decocker frame with a traditional hammer drop safety on the slide, so there are all sorts of ways to make the gun safe :)

"Just the frame mounted decock lever similar to the SIG P220 design."

Sig actually knows how to design a decocker lever, unlike S&W.

Even Astra designed a better decocker lever than S&W.

Thank you for your generous offer. I live remote in the Adirondack Mts of NY about 80 miles south of Canada. Now the frozen wilderness for 6 months LOL

Yes all the 3rd gen 10mm's take the same magazine's. If you think you will end up with one I would start buying magazines now. Sometimes Midway USA has new mags for them. Also you can find them on Gunbroker. I have accumulated most of mine from gunshows. If I see one I buy it. S&W made some extended magazines for the 10xx series but they are impossible to find.
