Model 52 barrel damage
Hey all
During our match yesterday I had 1 round that seemed really hot. I am using 2.8g of BE with a HBWC. There was a strange hole in the target after the hot round. Gun functioned no problem. I have heard that if the bullet separates it can damage the barrel. All I can tell is the barrel is about .002 out of round. It also is even down the barrel but at the chamber end is about .002 smaller.
Is this normal?
Thanks
Royce

I think what you experienced was the skirt of the bullet separating, that would explain the strange hole and is a known problem with that type of bullet if it is loaded a little hot. Could just be the bullet itself was defective but I would put my money on a hot load. I really doubt you damaged the barrel because that lead is so soft. I believe the separation occurs after the bullet leaves the barrel but I'm not positive about that. If there was no problem with accuracy after the incident I doubt I would worry about it. Sometimes these things happen and we never can figure out why.

Thanks for the info. I know my accuracy was off after the large bang! lol. So damage is easy to see than I gather?

Clark Custom Guns can roll the barrel back to factory specs for about $70. Friend of mine just got his 52 barrel back.

Doubtful, but might want to check bbl bushing. They are hardened and could possibly crack under unusual stress. Again doubtful, but?????

If you'd a skirt separation & shot another round after , chances are you bulged the barrel . Also check for a cracked barrel bushing . Pull barrel & inspect closely . You stated barrel out of round can you feel it or a bulge with you fingertips ? If so perhaps Clark can roll the bulge out for $70 I'd try that first . If accuracy aint there afterwards , perhaps you can get it relined . New unfitted barrels / bushings are out there but are extremely hard to find & they'll have to be fitted to your gun . That's the problem with used ones as one thats been fitted to another gun may not fit yours .

You cant feel it out of round. I used a micrometre to check it. And it is the same down the barrel until you get to the chamber area and then it get smaller. It is kind of oval with the side being smaller. The bushing is good. I think I got lucky for sure. Just went brain dead after the hot shot. After I fired the next round I knew I screwed up.
