Talking Another "Obsolete" .45. ***(Quick range report in post 27.)***

Well, I guess it's official. I'm affected with a 3rd gen and .45 ACP disease. I just picked up a 4516-2 to ad to my 3rd gen family.

And wouldn't you know it my 4567 slide fits on the 4516 frame as well as the reverse and they both will feed dummy rounds just fine.

So here are the photos because it did happen.

4516-2

4516 CCO.

4567 SSV.

Hope to add a range report and better "vanity" photos by next Saturday.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Nice looking pistol Picked up one like that back in December and had to drive 250 miles round trip to make it happen Got the guy to sweeten the deal by adding 6 more mags for it. Just waiting to try it out but 18in of snow between me and the range in the back 20 Along with the 2 norinco model 1911a1 I have acquired this winter. Will make a dent in my 45 ammo supply

So how much for the two tone CCO?

Congrats! The 4516 series are some of my favorite 45's.

If there was one real "gun guy" left at S&W they would make and market a two tone 3rd gen CCO 45.

Maybe if I buy BMCM a case of his favorite............

Enjoy those fine 45's! Regards 18DAI

I've never owned a .45. One of the rare calibers I haven't. I guess at some point I'll have to pick up one.

Those are nice.

Brentb636, Thanks.

RSBH44, looking forward to photos and a range report when you get yours.

Kff41, Sounds like you have the .45 bug too!

18DIA, You could find a 4566 slide used and get it Melonited... I know I'd love for BMCM to work his magic on this 4516 like he did on his. Maybe you and me need to make a road trip to see him with a whole truck load of his favorite.

Timn8er, just be patient, you'll find a deal.

Gunhobbit, Look on the bright side, the more of us getting .45's is less getting in on your 9mm's.

Nocents, Must be. But I'm glad.

MattO, You should try them at some point, a 4506 would make a great range gun.

Sterling, that will be hard. I'm guessing the CCO when IWB, the SSV when using a horizontal shoulder and the regular 4516 when using OWB. And I'm still going to keep using my Shorty as well. This could get complicated.

I just saw a 4516-2 in pretty much new condition in one of our local pawn shops. I think it was about $450 OTD. Unfortunately it was just not my day for a new gun.

Doubly obsolete, actually, since .45 is an obsolete caliber.

And don't forget it's DA/SA as well!

Oh, yeah I guess .45 is kind of obsolete, but "those wooly mammoths won't feel anything less than a pound of flint through the A Zone!"

Bam-Bam, Been carrying it around the house some today and it does ride very nice.

Manyguns, that's not a bad price at all.

Petepeterson, it sure is and I plan on keeping it.

Touchoneoff, Thanks.

OMG..... a DA/SA trigger !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'll never be able to master the transition.........I hear on all the Forums that it's impossible ...... the DA first shot will go in the dirt 6-8 feet in front of the target....... even at 3 yds......

You might even shoot yourself in the foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know, I'm putting everyone around me in danger! If I was more responsible I'd have a striker fired pistol with a 3lb pull.

BAM-BAM as a generation of shooters comes up whos only exposure to handguns is with striker fired plastic, never even trained with revolvers or TDA pistols, never experienced what a good trigger feels like, and goes on internet gun boards saying that the "demands for a good trigger are a crutch! Just adapt to the lousy gritty spongy trigger your plastic fantastic came with or buy Apex parts for it...." we will hear more and more of how impossible a TDA pistol is to shoot.

Good thing none of the 200 some odd little women I taught to use them read internet gunboards. Regards 18DAI

Yeah, well all of my 9s are DA/SA, except for the BHP. And the revolvers, other than the Ruger Bearcat.

But really, you guys that need the pound of flint to make up for the lack of skill needed to pinpoint a fire-hardened point right through the eye ... no wonder you drag so few mammoths back to the caves.

Not to mention lugging all those pounds of flint reloads leaves you too tired at the end of the day for anything with the cave-ladies....

Default Range report.

Well work was slow so I went on my lunch break and put 16rds through the SSV, 35rds through the CCO and 96rds through the 4516. Ran great except for two FTL in the 4516 with a "range only" magazine I grabbed by mistake. I forgot to keep the targets except for the last one that was with the 4516.

The furthest out I went was 12 yards as I was checking how they shot more than checking accuracy.

This is twenty rounds total and the only "target shooting" I really did, 4rds @ 3yds, 6rds @ 5yds and 7yds and 4rds more @ 10yds. (For Rastoff's shooting contest.)

I couldn't tell to much difference in handling between the 4516 and the CCO, but at longer ranges than I was shooting and if really focusing on accuracy it would probably be more apparent.

Thanks all for sharing my joy in getting a new pistol with me! (It makes it so much more fun.)

Most of us old timers grew up around and shooting revolvers. sadly, a lot of todays younger shooters didn't, and have to rely on slick marketing for their info. and shooting experience.
I made sure that when it came time to teach my children, both sons and daughters, how to shoot, they were going to first cut their teeth on revolvers.

I have to figure out how to work Shorty45Mk2's magic. He buys one gun, and when it gets home, it turns into three guns!

Where'd you find the 16, Graham?

Haha, with those targets I always seem to have at least one wadcutter.

It's a JohnHL's magic I just copied it.

I bought it from a member on here. If he wants to "fess up" I don't mind but don't want to say without knowing if he'd mind.

Fantastic find Shorty! It couldn't have found a better home. The 4516-2 was my first step into the world of 3rd Gens. I bought mine new back in the mid 90s. About two years ago I bought a 4506 no dash and not too long ago a 4566. All are fantastic guns, but I must confess that the 4506 is my favorite.

Me too. I can't recall exactly when, but it was close to the same time Colt brought out the Officer's ACP Lightweight, and I replaced the S&W with the Colt. I wouldn't say that was a mistake, but the Colt was/is not in the same class with the 4516-2 in terms of accuracy or reliability. I thought the S&W's bore-axis was too high, and that it was too heavy, and it is, but man would that gun shoot. It thought it was a target pistol and apparently no one had told it it wasn't.

Congrats to the OP on his new 4516.

Of course, when you say "member here" then everyone goes scampering back to the sales department to see who was selling 4516s...

I liked it as a CCO since it seemed to "balance" just a little better for me - but I tend to like a heavier barrel.

Nice to see it's still working!

Aha! I see my question has been answered.

So tell me, Shorty45MkII: did your FFL have any problem accepting shipment from an individual in Middle Earth, or was it necessary for the seller to find an FFL somewhere there in The Shire?

I hear Baggins Outdoor Sports is a pretty strong outfit. Specializing in swords, cudgels, and .45ACP handguns for the discriminating short, hairy-footed folk.

I wish they had a store here! I could use a sword that glows when Orcs are near...I hear that the elven folk can put a 45 ACP together that will rival any Wilson. And, if you by it from BOS you can pay them in mushrooms.

My FFL didn't have any problem, he just needed a copy of his Pony DL.

Yes BOS does have some nice equipment for the little folk, although the Dwarvin made HK's aren't to bad either!

I think your getting mushrooms confused with another substance.

Without a doubt the 45acp 3rd gen Smiths are my first choice in carry. Super accurate, flawless function, AK47 durable, eats anything that will go bang safely and looks dern sporty doing it all. I cant speak for everyone but its THE gold standard for me

Well, they are certainly an important part of any good meal - pretty much anything, except maybe rice pudding, is better with mushrooms!

I've told my story of going with S&W compact .45s before ....I would have stuck with the early 6shot TSW... if I could have found enough magazines in those pre internet days..........

If you can't find a Smith don't overlook the Sig 245 or 220 Compact ..... can't believe I've had a 245 for 20 years..... suddenly I feel old.....LOL

If they shoot like the full size 220, they would be very good for CC. I have thought about getting one or a 239 as an "other gun" for carry from the praise you and nocents have given them.
