Default 39-2 ten round feeding problems.

Good working model 39-2. All stock, changed nothing but the safety lever (broke), Numrich; $69. Has a lot of miles on it.

Never had any problems with feeding until I purchased a few aftermarket mags.

Eight rounders work great. The 10 round mags have given me a “stovepipe” with every try.

Could this be the “never changed” main spring in the gun?

Too strong/weak pressure of the mag spring?

New mags need to be worn in? Huh?

To reiterate: the gun works fine…until I got the ten rounders.

BTW: good quality ammo.

Depending on the maker, could be the mags. I have a hi power that works fine with its original mag with original spring in the mag dating from 68. Aftermarket 10 rounders from some el cheapo company work perfectly but try the 13 round ones from same company and it jams at least 6 times.
My own personal experience do with it what you will

This is precisely why it is important to abide by the following rule on all pistols except the 1911: factory mags ONLY; except that Mec-Gar, which makes many factory mags, may be substituted.

The rule with the 1911 is Wilson, McCormick, or a couple of other after market brands only.

If it is flawless with the original 8 round magazines then stay with what works every time.

Shawn's above post is right on....the only S&W mag I will use that is NOT a S&W is Mec-Gar and they most likely made the originals anyway!

One shop told me the (real) eight round mags are hard to find.

These were from ammoclip.com. I'll look for Mec-Gar.

I really feel naked (vulnerable) with a gun you can't trust. Yunno?

I use the 9 round 3906 magazines for my 39-2. I started when I got the pistol in 97 and have never had an issue. Of course these are S&W factory magazines, so maybe that makes the difference. Midway has a ton of them.

I was hoping someone had the same experience with the ten rounders,
"hey two extra shots"...whoopee. That's turned into "oh ****!"

Throw away (precious little) money; I bought two.

Just have to ask the Universe here: how come things (these days) never work???

After market magazines are often of poor quality and worse reliability. As has been noted, the exception is Mec-Gar who made the OEM magazines for S&W. I hate so say it, but save yourself the aggravation, and get rid of those 10 round magazines. Consider it a learning experience.

If The 39-2 was built to have 10 rd mags then your would have a problem, but it was built to hold 8 rd mags.

I have two 9 rounders from what had to be a 3906 and they work great in my 39-2 and my 439.

Toss the aftermarket 10rd mags.

If you want to have higher capacity in a similar gun, start saving for a 6906 and sport 12-15 rounds. About $425 used in good shape.

Sorry to be terse but throw the non functioning 10 rounders away and learn how to reload.

UPDATE: News flash!

Midway has Wolff Conventional Recoil Springs in different ratings.

I purchased a (stock) 14 lb. and a 17 lb.

The slide feels much harder to pull back; I feel so "duh."

Itching to go to the range, I'll let you know how it goes, this gun feels good now. Wait and see.

The odds are overwhelming that the aftermarket mags are the problem. It is very unlikely that the recoil spring is the problem. There are several sound answers up above, all saying the same. The vast majority of pistols should be fed via factory mags only. 1911s are an exception, and apparently MagPul is now making mags for the Glock 19 and 17. Your best option is hammer therapy on the mags, and stick with the factory mags that are a proven quantity.

Ditch the 10 rounders and use the 8 rounders. Practice quick magazine changes with the 8 round mags. and your won't need the 10 rounders!
