Default What to look for in a 1006?

So I may have caught the 10mm bug...

What should I look for in a 1006?
  • Multiple magazines
  • Fixed night sights?
  • ???

Any different revisions I should know about / look for / avoid?

TIA!

The more goodies the better. Extra mags are definitely a plus. If you're anticipating using it in low light, night sights are a big help but expect any factory installed (1990ish) to be dim & have to be relamped. Trijicon does it for a little under $75, IIRC. Night sights don't show up as bold in daylight as white dots, IMO, but it may just be my aging eyes.

I'm a fan of adjustable sights. I'm sure they're less desirable for EDC but my 10mm just goes to the range & having adjustable works for me. LPA makes a nice one that can be added & works with the factory front sight.

No different revisions for the 10xx guns.

Try to inspect whatever you decide on closely & you should have a gun to last a long time that you'll enjoy!

Since the 1006 digests a wide range of power level ammo, adjustable sights make sense to me. Too durn heavy for a carry gun, unless one were really anticipating trouble. Then I'd take something else anyway, or just stay home.

Thanks guys - I'd heard a lot of grumping about the S&W adjustable sights, and I confess to not being terribly fond of the look of the "ears" but they seem like a decent compromise between adjustability and protection.

Definitely NOT an EDC gun but would like the option to tote it in bear country for instance. Maybe I should get over the fixed sights thing. (Yes, I planned to relamp any night sights - even the ones on my '02 vintage 5906 are pretty near useless by now.)

Very pretty 1076 there - I think I'm still leaning towards a 1006, but the 1066/1076 are a close second.

I mentioned magazines just because they seem quite scarce right now so finding an owner who already stocked up sounds wise.

My S&W 1006 had the straight backstrap stocks on it, which I changed out to the curved backstrap stocks. It fits my hand better. While it is rather heavy, the weight helps to tame the recoil of the Double Tap ammo I carry when I am hiking.

The 1006 is rugged but you will want to inspect it well, while they are stainless steel then can a do rust if not cared for. Those that sit in leather holsters can show pitting if it was wet or sweaty.

Adjustable sights are handy for longer range shooting where the fixed are more of a combat fast target acquisition. There was a change to the factory grip and there was a recall.
RECALL: Smith & Wesson has shipped over 300,000 Third generation Pistols. We have had a very small number or reports where a dropped pistol resulted in a broken grip resulting in a failure to fire by releasing mainspring tension. Resultant testing and review have shown that a pistol dropped at a specific angle can cause a fracture of the grip.

Check the bore for wear, grip removal is suggested for frame inspection, but be careful and do this correctly as it can damage the link. Trigger play springs can crack and are usually audible as a clicking unless totally broken off. Then the trigger may not return fully.

Recoil springs and others are available from Wolff Gun Springs and it is a good idea to beef up to the 20lb or 22 lb recoil spring.

All this being said most of the 10's were not shot as much as other due to ammo cost and availability.

Best regards! Good luck!

Hmmm, so almost every 1006 I've seen has silver hammer & trigger, except for one - which has black/blue. Would that have been some kind of action work or was there a change one way or the other (i.e. early silver, later blue/black)?

Also, I see Trijicon still sells the inserts for the adjustable sights, so you guys have me convinced adjustable is Ok or even preferable

Thanks!

Great question on the hammer/trigger color.

It is my best guess that any 10xx pistol found WITHOUT the silver/gray cast trigger & hammer has been altered as all should have been shipped with the cast parts.

Not a deal breaker mind you. Could very well have been done at S&W or by an armorer or simply by a skilled enthusiast because it's not that difficult to do.

To the general subject of what to chase...
They made six models and the 1006 was produced in the largest supply, roughly two-fifths of total production. When all else is "equal", this makes the 1006 the most reasonably priced.

I used to think that fixed sights were some kind of impediment to accurate shooting but a couple decades of quality shooting has totally changed my mind. I wouldn't enter a small group/bullseye match for money with them as my first choice, but they are NO handicap. And for woods work?! Fixed would be my choice.

Thanks! After today's MIM discussion, I'm fairly certain the black hammer/trigger in the 1006 I spotted are forged and NOT MIM. I'm awaiting info on the S/N to see if it was a very late production example (perhaps right at the transition to non-flash-chromed fire control parts?). The gun appears nearly unfired in other aspects, so I'd be surprised if it was an owner-swap, but who knows.

I've largely settled on the 1006 due to size and controls, but the availability doesn't really hurt I'll probably take whichever flavor of sights comes on whichever gun best fits the other criteria - though I still think I prefer the cosmetics of the fixed sights.
