My reading of the Standard Catalog of Smith Wesson (3rd edition) page 401 puts your firearm as made in 1988. The first year that the model 4506/4506-1 was made. They were in production from 1988 through 1999 though some limited custom models were later produced for LAPD. Traditional double action, 5" barrel, 8-shot magazine, .304" smooth trigger, ambidextrous safety. 41 ounces. They are nice handguns, but not rare. The price varies widely with condition and these have generally been eclipsed in desirability by the newer M&P models. Anecdotally, I like mine not only because it is a better 45 ACP handgun than the venerable 1911, but it is one of the few handguns that is heavy enough to use as a club if you run out of ammo. I will not be selling mine!

You might want to reconsider selling that gun. Back in the day, I would buy a gun, keep it for a year, then sell it, & kick in $100 & get something else. While I did that many times, I always regretted selling my 645. Well it took me 22 years to find another 645 as clean as mine was, & at a reasonable price. Now they don't make anything that resembles a 645/4506, so make sure you know what you are doing. GARY

Though a bit too heavy for me now, I have my issue 4506 which has only been to the range once (50 rounds). We had just changed from 645 to 4506 shortly before I retired. They give you your issue pistol when you retire.

Agree with Rick on this one. I have had my -1 model for many years. These Gen 3's are just a rock solid & reliable handgun that will handle the nastiest 45acp ammo you wish to feed it.

That's nice. The local sheriff does that here too with one stipulation. The gun is yours to keep, but you can never part with it. Should you later decide you don't want it for whatever reason, you have to give it back to the department. It can not be sold, or given away, & you must sign paperwork to that effect before retirement. Something to do with the county crest being engraved on the slide. GARY

A 4506 is one of the few .45 pistols I would consider actually buying. And if I ever do buy one, only dire finances would get me to part with it.

Houston I like mine not only because it is a better 45 ACP handgun than the venerable 1911. that of course is your opinion and you're entitled to it, but erroneous. :)

Certainly an opinion, Why do you say erroneous? My 2004-2006 4506-1 shoots very accurately. In fact, it will hold its own against many "firearms". And It doesn't need tuning, or tweaking, or finding the ammo to feed reliably.
