5903 question
After searching around can't really find the answer I'm looking for. I'm looking at a possible 5903 with square trigger guard and adjustable sights. I would only be able to buy says the wife if this is on the rarer side. From looking on here it appears the 5903 did come with square guard and adj sights, but nothing about production numbers. I did not read anything about these features in the 3rd edition SCSW. The asking price is around $420 shipped to my FFl with transfer fee. I will ask for a serial to call and find the date. Anyone have any idea? The price is right in my book based on the pictures I was sent.

Of course it's rare. It's the only one they made with that serial number on it.

Wow, that was helpful.
To the subject, I would not say that's a "super rare" pistol and not in high demand. The price is not awful, it's quite fair, but it's not a pistol that specifically excites me. If I read your post the way you intend... it would be my opinion that you should wait for a different, better opportunity to snag a neat pistol on a tightly-run budget.
With that said...
Simply my opinion. I don't care for the aluminum frame 3rd Gens so much. I prefer the weight, the longevity and mostly... the LOOK of the full steel frame. Also, the square trigger guard I find less attractive and the adjustable sights I find very, very much less attractive. But these are merely my opinions. That pistol, in decent shape for that price is -NOT- a bad purchase and it is a high quality handgun.
It's just not a pistol that excites me at any price.

We were told (in '89) that the 5903 was initially being produced as a LE production gun, before it would be commercially available in normal cataloged production. A lot lighter on the gun belt for hours at a time.
The parts list for the 5903 shows the Adjustable Rear Sight (and all it's myriad parts), so it was obviously available as an option. I'd have no idea how many might've been ordered that way as LE guns, and then later produced for commercial runs. The adjustable sights were large, bulky and made up of a lot of small parts. It probably didn't help the popularity that it used a unique dovetail, either.
I saw a lot of steel-framed 4006's & 5906's with adjustable sights from those early days, though.

Gave S&W a call and found it was made in 1990. The serial is TEH1xxx, so I would assume an early 1st year production.

GA State Patrol ordered and carried for at least 10 years. Swapped model 19s out. Lots of local PD & SO bought off State Contract. I have seen several Gwinette County SO guns on the secondary market, but never any GSP.

So Chris from S&W was very helpful in getting the production codes and made dates for the 6 3rd gens I own. Ended up sending it all in an email due to the number of guns. The 5903 which I should be able to pick up tomorrow was made 5/29/1990 with product code 104042.
My oldest 3rd gen the 3906 is from 6/17/1989, and the newest is my 3913 at 4/20/2000.

The uncle of a friend of mine has an ex Gwinnett county 5903.
My 5906, 5946, and 6906 are all ex Middle GA LE guns.
The 5906 and 6906 are both square trigger guard versions.
I prefer the square trigger guard 3rd gens to the round TG.

My 5906 is a LEO trade in. If I call S&W and give them the serial # will/can they tell me what LE agency it was issued to?

Is yours marked anywhere on the frame or slide? Calling S&W customer service is like playing the lotto. Sometimes you win and other times you don't.
