Bought a 1911 from Smith & Wesson. Im pretty happy with it. I ran about 500 rounds thru it yesterday, all factory ammo. 3 different types of bullets. No failures of any type. Needless to say, its a filthy pig now, and will stay that way for the first 1k rounds because I do like to test my guns to failure.

I did the normal teardown and cleaning after I picked it up. Just a thorough cleaning, and a light lubing of Ballistol. Slide to frame fit wobble is very minimal, just enough for reliable firing. Gun functioned very well with factory ammo, 230gr FMJs, 200gr FP, 185gr FP. Ejection was predictable for factory ammo, high, far and about 4 o'clock. Accuracy was decent, 2" group at 50' with all ammo types, and Im an average shot with a pistol. The sights do need a slight adjustment, as I am hitting about 3" left of POA at 50'. Trigger is very good for a factory gun in my opinion.

My only complaint is the factory sights. Im not a huge fan of Novak style, and I prefer my POA to be 6 o'clock on a 6" circle at 50'. I need to determine the front height needed to lower my POA about 3". I would like to change to a fiber front, likely from Dawson Precision as they offer the best options and Ive used them on other guns. The rear sight can probably stay, but Ill black out the white dots. Ive also considered putting an adjustable rear on, but my searches to find an adjustable rear sight that is not a magnet for hanging up on everything has been tough. Any insight on that would be good.

I will be working up reloads with a variety of bullets, and a couple of different powders I keep on hand in quantity. This should give me an improvement in accuracy, as a good bullet will.

Congrats on your new gun. Exactly which 1911 did you get?

You mentioned Dawson. They actually have a calculator to help you determine what size sight you need to change to:

.

Its an engraved version of the basic E Series. Cabelas had a sale, between my Cabelas cash, vet discount, I walked out with it for $900 and some change. I have no use for tactical rails with flashlights and lasers that scream "shoot me here", so I passed on an tactical rail stuff that are on the more expensive models, just not needed for me.

And yup, Dawson. My M&P Pro 5" has Dawson adjustable sights on it, but they are not snag free. Great sights though.

Id like to find an adjustable for the rear though, but it needs to be snag free. Just overall, less dicking around with getting the sights where you want them if you are not drifting them all the time.
