In my opinion, folks, it's the Model 3913, hands down, no question.

It's lightweight. It's flat and slim. It's as reliable as a hammer. It's accurate. It fires either double- or single-action. Your choice. It has a total capacity of 9 rounds, and unless you're facing a platoon-size gang of miscreants, that should be plenty. It's made of metal, not plastic. With proper 9mm ammo, it's quite effective on live targets - man or beast.

Yes, there are plenty of other 9mm pistols designed for discreet carry. Most are bulkier. Some have had teething problems. None are more accurate. Some will not handle specific types of ammo. Others have deplorable trigger pulls. More than a few are plug-ugly; no pride of ownership possible.

I'd even go so far as to say that this is arguably the finest 9mm concealment pistol ever made. If you are looking for the finest, I recommend that you find one - haunt the gun shows, the gun stores and the internet until you do. Then rest easy; you will be well equipped.

Disagree if you will - you know what they say about opinions, but I've thought it through and my mind's made up!

There are many of them, but this one is mine - a 3913NL, equipped with tritium sights. These made a special gun even more special for low-light use.

DITTO ........ my 1st thought when I saw the post title.........

I've had a 39xx as my primary concealed carry handgun since 1989/90............ 3913 3914 and 3913NLs ...... all wear Houge Grips mostly checkered wood ...... though my 3913 with 5906 hammer wears Hogue rubber grips at the moment....I'm also partial to the 7rd metal baseplate flush fit magazine; carried in a Milt Sparks IWB holster.......... as my primary carry in "The Burbs of the Burgh" backed up with a standard 8rd magazine.

For more than a decade I expected the "next" Bond movie to have a scene where M makes Bond turn in his 7.65mm PPK for a 3913/14NL in 9mm...... "like dropping the whole brick wall through a plate-glass window!" :D

I'm sure this is a nice gun. However, I've had my Shield (without thumb safety) for more than a year and have no trouble with it and it weighs about 5 ounces less. I recently made it even nicer with the Apex sear and ultimate stricker block added which lightened the trigger and smoothed it out. I also added TruGlo night/day sights and now a good gun is a great gun. All of that being said, I don't own one but the Kahrs weigh a little less and might be consider even more "discreet".

For me it's a shield. Second would be 3913 / 3914.

Look's like just what I'm looking for, except for it having a safety. Is there one like it (well made, single-stack, hammer fired, decocker) without a safety?

Couldn't agree more, the 3913 and it's kin (3914, 908, TSW's, CS9, etc.) are the ideal 9mm CC guns, IMO. Very safe to load, unload, and carry with TDA, easy to conceal (but big enough to handle recoil), and pretty fun to hunt down, too. :D

No doubt the Shields are nice, but plastic & stiker-fire just aren't for me. I'd rather pick up a spare 908 (which is about my limits for plastic parts on a handgun ;)). I've owned a few all-metal Kahrs and they're great guns as well, but mine don't make it into the rotation very often. Too many 3rd Gens to fit in, I guess.

Flat backstrap on the 3913 and its tribe ruins the handling for me. I bought a Shield the first year they came out and decided it would be perfect without a manual safety. As soon as they started making it without the safety, I bought one of those, too.

Cheers,
Whisper

P.S. I keep reading very good things about the Walther PPS M2....

I do not own a Smith auto,, so I am learning,,,
is a model of this available in a more subdued color,,,, like black??

3914...same gun in black.

As for the best carry S&W 9mm...I have two 3913's and they are great by any measure. But for straight up carry I give a slight tip to the 3953 just because it's slimmer and I like DAO. I actually carry a 6904 with a single sided safety most of the time. JMHO.

Edit: I have 3 3913's....how could I forget my LS?

The 908 was my carry gun for the past year. Then I tried a Shield and had the "full" package....Apex and night sights...and the 908 went into the safe. I could shoot the Shield as well as the 908, better even, and it seemed smaller, lighter, I could use the 8 round mag easily, carries completely invisible in tuckable holster and because it has a safety I have to option to use it or not.

There is no question the 3912 is the more elegant pistol. It's a classic thing of beauty. But as far as being a utilitarian self-defense "tool," for me at least, the plastic worked better. I'm not sure I would have sold a 3913, it's simply too elegant looking; but the 908 is more workmanlike and for me there was not too much artistic attachment. (My 39-2 and 5906 will probably never be on the market.)

End of the story: the 908 was gathering dust in the safe and it got sold to help buy a Sig 226.
