Default S&W 2nd Gen Compact Safety Question

On a S&W 469 or 669, how difficult is it to get a replacement safety that has the flat side on the right, eliminating the ambidextrous lever on that side?

And, the next logical question would be, after getting the parts, how hard is it to install?

Thanks all!

If you mean changing out an ambi safety, (levers on both sides),
to a single, (left side lever only), easy, and easy. If you mean
a safety with only a lever on the right side, no go.

No, you've got it. I want to change out the ambidextrous safety as a unit and go to one that has only one safety lever on the left side of the slide, and the flat plug on the opposite side.

No problem. Easy to get still, and easy to change out. Most
people go the other way. Save your original ambi ones though
when/if you do it !!!

Like 4T5GUY says, changing is easy, if you know how.
Finding one is usually not too difficult.
Any 2nd or 3rd gen 9mm (or 40 s&w double stack) safety is interchangeable. (45, 10mm, 40 s&w single stack won't work.)
The usual sources (S&W, Midway, Brownell's, Numrich, GB, ebay) are the places to search.

Also, when/if you do the swap, put everything back together.
The springs are NOT interchangeable, and the one under the
safety lever detent is sometimes hard to get.
You can reuse the spring and detent for the safety body, just
swap them out with your "new" one.

Sure!
Remove slide.
Remove right side safety lever.
Depress firing pin safety plunger.
Push firing pin all the way forward against firing pin spring through firing pin hole and capture with hemostats.
Push safety body out left side being ever mindful of the safety body plunger and spring.
Installation is the reverse of the above.

John

You should remove the guide rod & spring too.
Sometimes these can really fly away.

VERY, VERY CAREFULLY! No, I'm not kidding. There are several small detent plungers and springs involved. They are not interchangeable. When you remove the right hand safety lever, bag and tag the detent plunger and spring. If you get a new spring and plunger with the new safety, bag and tag the plunger and spring that is on the left hand side of the safety. Put everything in one bag/box/container.

If you''re reusing the plunger and spring from the old safety, just go ahead and do so. I'd put a note in the bag with the old safety that an new plunger & spring are needed.

JohnHL has good instructions, but remove the recoil spring assembly and barrel before working on the safety. Otherwise, follow directions.
