Default S&w 4040

I really messed up this time. I was at a estate auction near the house Sat and they had some long guns and 3 hand guns, one was a S&W 4040 LNIB. I bid on it til it got to 300 and I stoped and let two others fight it out, well the next bid 350 took it home.
when I got home I looked it up. Boy did I mess up.

Put a sign that says "Kick Me" on your butt because you'll get tired doing it yourself. I'm not a .40 guy, but a 4040 at that price would end up in my safe.

It's not a widely known model and many dont know what theyre looking at when they see it.

I let the first one I ever saw walk - the second is in my safe.

I took a look at the SCSW and the only 4040 listed is the 4040PD. The picture in the book shows a sloped dust cover like a 3913 Lady Smith. Nice looking gun.

I own a 4040PD or two, and IMO it's the best CC 40 out there. They don't come around too often, but if you're patient (and being on GB helps) you should get another opportunity at one for a decent price.

And I wouldn't sweat the one you missed too much, he got a killer deal for sure, but how much more would it have cost if you had stayed in the auction? He was willing to pay at least $350, and if he knew what it was may have gone over the $500 mark for it.

Thanks to all for making me feel better about my screw up. I didn't come away empty handed, got a vary clean ruger security six 357 with the 2.75 barrel, and I have been wanting another wheel gun.

I did pay twice as much for one just hours ago on Gunbroker. $700 with FFL shipping. Not LNIB but pretty nice cosmetically. It will be a shooter so I can leave my Shorty Forty at home, being the Queen in my safe.

I was was watching this as I recently purchased one - quite a run up towards the end.

Ultimately you will pay just about what I did just a few weeks ago.

Congratulations and please post up some pictures after you receive your new gun.

That run-up was me not wanting to be denied. I had hoped for less but was prepared for more. $700 w/ shipping is where it ended.

Here is the photo from the auction, more to come when I receive it.

I love mine. I only own two 40's, the 4040pd and CS40. The Chiefs gets a lot more range time as well as carry time, but the 4040 has a safe place in my heart and collection.

My 4040PD came yesterday the condition exceeded my expectations but I've yet to fire it.

it's only half an ounce heavier than my 3914LS or 3913NL but identical dimensionally

I installed new recoil springs (it has two), cleaned oiled it and lubed the slide. after thorough testing and sighting in I expect to make it my primary carry gun.

It came with two magazines but I want to get a third to fill my shoulder holster rig's pouch. The 4040PD mag is unique in that it has a ball bering in the follower to insure engaging the slide stop after emptying the mag.

Magazines for the 4040PD seem to be the rarest of all other than the 10mm 15 round mags. The only one I've found is a "buy it now" for $150! And I thought 10mm mags were expensive.

Okay, you can look at this from a couple of different angles. First, you're correct, you messed up. However, maybe not as bad as you think. That guy who bid $350 may have wanted that pistol a lot. You could have found yourself in a bidding war . . . and you can get carried away when that starts.

Default It's worse than he thinks ...

If it had a spare mag with it the magazines alone were worth $300.

I've had a chance to shoot my $700 4040PD just enough to verify sight alignment.

Another few boxes through it and final sighting in with my carry ammo (Hornady Critical Defense 165 gr) and I'll be comfortable carrying it.

Default 4040PD Update ...

Well I've had a chance to put a few boxes of ammo through the 4040PD and it handled everything I put in it with now failures of any kind.

I've also added a new set of Trigicons to make it match my 3914LS which is my usual carry auto. The half oz weight difference is not noticeable but the snap and blast of the .40 S&W does make a difference.

I'm not very recoil sensitive as I shoot .44 mags out of my model 69 and 10mm out of my 1006 and 1076. I find sending a 165 gr solid copper bullet comforting, so the 4040PD has taken over as the gun I go to for personal defense.

Of course my 360PD AirLite always goes along AISW or in an ankle holster if deeper concealment is required. The recoil of that one is about double of the 4040PD.
