I'm considering a 6946 but spare magazines are scarce, can anyone tell me if the 59xx series magazine would work. Thanks in advance.

Yes!
Any of the 9mm double stack 5900 and 6900 series mags will work.

Precision Gun Specialties makes an adapter for the 5906 magazines so that there is no gap in the bottom due to the extra length if used in the 69 series guns.

I go to a lot of gun shows here in Ohio,59 series are most plentiful,69 series are 2nd most plentiful.
