Smith and Wesson 439 questions
Saw one, mint in box, adj. sights, 3 mags for $575. Is it worth it, and issues with this model?
Thanks

New, mint in box, 3 mags. Offer him $525 for it but $575 doesn't seem to me to be a rip off.
Issues? well it's about the prettiest semi auto pistol ever along with it's other 39 series kinfolk. I take my 639 out and fondle it a lot. Might get some odd looks. It's a second gen. so it's had a few bugs worked out.

For a NIB Model 439 with the papers original 2 mags and cleaning kit and wrapped in nice condition S&W wax paper I would pay $550 out the door.If it's LNIB then I would want to get it for less.
I like the blue 1st,2nd and a few of the 3rd generation(5904 w/rabbit ear sight).
If you don't like the rabbit ear sight then search around for a Millett Series 100 Adjustable Sight System for S&W 400/500/600 Series part #SW40502
The original boxes are mostly in worse shape than the guns in them since the cardboard doesn't stand up to aging as cared for metal does.

@Rogo,
I purchased a used 439 in the late '90s, if I remember correctly, I paid somewhere in the low to mid $300 range. If you are looking to negotiate, check to see if the recall had been complied with. There was a recall at some point in the early '90s, and I believe it was related to the decocker. Reasonably priced S&W original magazines are hard to come by, and I have seen them commanding the better half of a hundred dollar bill, so figure that third magazine is $75 of the asking price. I have 5 magazines, 3 S&W and 2 ProMag. The ProMag magazines function, but they don't seat flush with the bottom of the grip like the S&W mags do.
I have had mine on the short side of 20 years. My 439 has functioned flawlessly. Currently, it is vying for my first choice in carry gun when I carry, and it is my go to pistol for the dueling tree. I figure if it can feed my truncated nose cast bullets, it will feed anything. I have 4 holsters for it, a DeSantis, a belt slide, a paddle, and an IWB Kydex. The only complaint that I have with it, was that I had to replace the magazine release assembly at the time of purchase, because the threads had been crossed, then stripped.
Honestly, I love mine, and might consider a second one. My 439 is growing on me like my K38s, one is just not enough!

The gun is with a local dealer. I will check the serial number and de cocker function. Will S and W still repair this model?
Will it handle very limited plus p ammunition?
The Illinois State Police used guns like this and shot plus P plus ammo. They did send the guns into their armory frequently for servicing.
I had an original 39 that was problematic, so I sent it in to S&W for repair. When it came back I still had trouble with the magazines ,so I traded it off. I still like the old Smith DA autos. They are all made of metal.

I have a 2 tone 439. S&W doesn't approve these for +P loads. However they will survive fine if not fed a heavy diet of them, and if you use a heavier recoil spring. Wolff Springs should have them a pound or two heavier if you really feel the need to use +P a lot.
Great feel to them. I have some NOS wood grips, but it wears the Pacmayer Signature rubber grips right now.

I don't know of anyone who needed theirs serviced by the armory. None of my people did and I never heard anyone at the main range talk about it either.

The recall involves the pistol decocker functioning from the half cock position. You can test an unloaded pistol as follows: With the safety/decocker in the fire position pull the hammer into half cock and actuate the safety. If the hammer falls then the pistol is fine, if it doesn't then in for repair.
I have a 539 that falls in the recall range but it is fine. Be aware that if it is an unfired or near unfired gun it will be stiff. My 539 is near unfired and not smoothed out like a well fired gun.
edit: I have never fired +P ammo in any of my 9's. I'm not trying to tell anyone else what to shoot but I've never seen the need to punish the guns. If I want more power I'll simply move up in caliber. The 9 is what it is.
