I'm internet looking at a 5903. Seller says all 5903s came with a short reset trigger.

I can't find anything on that, but that doesn't mean its not true. He says that its not a well advertised fact, and it was done to make the pistols more appealing to the LE community (thats his statement).

Also he says that the gun has a shorter reset than a Sig 226 WITH a SRT installed. I'm not comparing the Sig to the Smith as an entire gun, just comparing the reset and the trigger of the two.

I have a Sig with a SRT and an action job performed by Sig. So its its better than that... I'll be impressed.

I haven't handled the gun (yet). I am deciding if this is all smoke and no fire. And if its worth the time to check it out.

Thoughts and facts?

Thanks.

3rd gen S&W double action autos all had a short trigger reset, IIRC.
My 5906, 6906, and 4566 all have it.

Correct. All of the Smith TDA's have a very short reset. The 39-2 is outstanding but all of my 3rd gens are as well. Much shorter than any fantastic plastic I've ever handled.:p

Thanks for the answers. What is the factory SA pull? My Sig with the action enhancement is 4#. I think it's fantastic. If the Smith is around that, I'm sure it'll be great too.

In my experience, the factory SA trigger pull on clean, unaltered, well maintained S&W 3rd generation pistols will be in the 5.0 - 5.5lb range. The factory dictated minimum SA is 4 pounds.

The S&W reset is comparable to the Sig....the quality and # rating of the S&W SA pull, sadly, is not.

I agree with that. While the reset on Smiths is short the triggers are not 3lbs. It does make sense though in the LE or "tactical" application...light triggers are for competition and some hunting scenarios. Don't get me wrong, I love a short, light trigger! I think we all shoot better with them.

The lightest SA Smith trigger I can find in my stuff is 4.5lbs. Most run closer to 5.5 or 6. Most of my stuff has fairly low round counts as I have several that I shoot regularly and others not much and others not at all. Heavier use or a little polishing would probably reduce the weight by up to a pound.

If you are a huge TDA fan and want the best trigger then Sig and their price tag are the way to go. If you want a quality gun at a better price then Smith will certainly satisfy. While you have to give the nod to Sig on the trigger, reliability of both is outstanding. I won't talk about accuracy because that is 95% the shooter.;)

Back when I took a SIG ("Classic") pistol armorer class, their SRT was brand new.

In the class, we were told that SIG engineers had originally designed the new SRT (new sear & sear spring) as a LE option, as a way to compete against S&W for LE contracts. It would give them a SA trigger mode that would mechanically reset as short and as quickly as the standard S&W for the customer agencies that still favored traditional double action duty pistols (DA/SA), while they had their Enhanced DAO guns (DAK) for the agencies who wanted DAO guns (although the DAK does have 2 different mechanical reset points, with different trigger pull weights for them).

We were told that the company had decided to offer the SRT as an option in their commercial guns. At that time, they were still in the process of trying to determine which models could be retrofitted with the new SRT parts. We were given a short list of some common LE models in which the new SRT parts would fit, and told to call back for info about other models as time progressed.

I handled a SRT-modified gun in that class and thought that it did, indeed, have a similarly short mechanical reset to the 3rd gen S&W's I'd been issued and owned.

SIG TDA models typically have a lighter SA trigger weight than the S&W's 3rd gen's. I thought it was listed at approx 4.5lbs in my older armorer manual, but the current specs online list a SA trigger weight of 4.4lbs.
