Great pistol. Nice review!

Do you know the history on that particular 645? I ask because yours has an undercut trigger guard. I never saw one with that feature that wasn't done by a talented smith.

I need to have that feature added to mine. I better call Karl Sokol before he stops working on them. Regards 18DAI

Did the 645 go through changes that would explain the different front and rear sights? My 645 had an integral stainless ramp with a red insert, and fixed rear sights. Is that a 4506 upper perhaps ?

My M645 was hand built by my friend and PD Armorer at S&W class in Springfield. I bought it from him Jan 7, 1989. It has all the available 4506 upgrades. It doesn't have an undercut trigger guard. It must have been one of the last batch. SN# TAN93XX

If yours has an undercut trigger guard, I'm inclined to think it's custom work. I think your sights were added, very well, I might add. Or it may truly be transitional as the grip seems to be the 3rd gen.

Sadly, I do not know the history. I'm told the gun was made shortly before Smith and Wesson went to the 4506. It came to me with the fixed rear sight and I swapped it for the LPA. The stock grip panel was one piece, wrap around and way too slick for my liking. I too was intrigued by the drift adjustable front sight having not seen one on a 645 before. It probably left the factory with a 645 frame and 4506 slide as a model straddling the timeline between the two iterations.

Based on the words from some of the frequent posters here, I also acquired a 4566 which I will get to shooting soon.

It might well have mixed model parts... a true transitional. My 645 came with the 4506 safety. One of the upgrades. But had the nice wood grip panels shown.
Smith never wasted anything.

I enjoyed your review. Your smooth shooting tells me that you have been around guns for a while.

I can tell you that your Model 645 is actually one of the Model 4506 pilot guns. Less than 300 of the initial production 4506's left the factory with the receiver marked as a Model 645.

Your stocks are Hogue and not original and the rear sight has been replaced with an LPA adjustable sight.

You are correct. I replaced the slick, one piece, plastic stock with the Hogue. The plastic stock was inferior for grip surface. I replaced the rear sight as the sight picture was not to my liking. I retained the parts I took off. Hopefully this will bolster resale value when my heirs pawn it.
