Default New to me 4046

I just brought home a 4046 TSW with Brinks logo and 3 magazines from a friend. Many years ago I carried a Smith and Wesson Model 39, 59 and 459 pistols as a small town cop. I traded a lot and had many handguns through my holsters. Carried several 469s over the years as well. A temporary career change caused a break in my handgun affliction and when I again got into Law Enforcement and the gun scene the Glock, Beretta and SIG were the big players. I Later acquired several of the S&W M&P autos that came out but I had never owned a 3rd Gen Smith & Wesson auto. That has been corrected.

My new pistol has a weapon mounted light rail that will not work with my collection of different lights. Research on the forum pointed me to some other options as the rails were not the standard common now. No worries as this will be more of a range toy.

I love the balance of the piece. Monday I plan to shoot some drills and qualifications to get a feel for the pistol in a dynamic way. I can handle just so much dry fire practice and holster drills. To keep me happy I need to smell the powder burning.

It is a bonus to now have a pistol in the collection by the original designers for the .40 Smith and Wesson cartridge. I believe the 3rd gen guns were the first Smiths to be chambered in .40. The fact I have only $300 in the pistol is gravy. One of the local gun stores has a passel of these pistols for sale at under $300. A classic pistol at a great price for those of us that remember the time before plastic.

All we're missing are some photos! I'm still a fan of the .40 S&W cartridge, but I am missing a .40 in my meager 3rd gen accumulation somehow.

Does your LGS have a website where they sell & ship firearms? I'd love to have a $300 .40 TSW Smith. Congratulations on finding your way back. While not in LE myself, I did follow a similar "polymer path", and then discovered the 3rd gens.

UPSATE: I ran across a near pristine 4046 (although it does have a badge or agency number) and put it on layaway!

"Shoot Straight" is the name of the local shop and they have a variety of stores around the state. They also have a series of gun shows they sponsor and show in. I believe their web site ( Shoot Straight - Since 1979 )can help with options for their extensive inventory but I am not sure about the surplus guns they have on sale.

As for photos, without TinyPic being in business anymore I am looking for a free hosting service.

I also have a Brinks 4046TSW. I agree that these are wonderful pistols at a great price, and between the cleaning I did and a new set of Hogue grips it is now in excellent condition and fires smoothly and accurately. I picked it up at the gun show in Orlando a little while back for $329 and it was money well spent. Hope you enjoy your new-to-you pistol and here are a few photos of mine.

If you can go up $85, you can get a 4006 CHP from Summit.

Great gun at a great price. At $300 you get a great all around gun for home defense, target practice, or CCW .......if you find a good holster and belt. Those guns are heavy!

Where do they hide the serial numbers on the 4046 TSW's?

I have a 4566 TSW and the serial is right where they all are. (even though it starts with KSP) Seems odd?

If you are asking about the photos of my 4046TSW (Post #4), my serial number is exactly where your serial number is - except I edited mine out of the picture with some basic photo editing software. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a couple of these D.A.O. 3rd gens in model 4053 and 6946 and the action is smooth on both which make them very easy for me to shoot very accurately...I like the 4046s' too and would like one...the 4053 is a single stack on the larger 45 frame I believe, and the 4046 on the 5906 frame...coolio pistols too!

I was amazed with the trigger action on my 4046. I normally shy away from DAO actions but this one just felt right. I know that this action loses the second-strike capability, but that's ok. I like the trigger that much.
